I sometimes find that "I love you" just doesn't fit the situation, expecially if you were just talking about something like sports.

"Oh, did you see the baseball game last night?"
"No, I don't like baseball..."
"oh..."*awkward silence* "I love you"

Yup, you are right. It has to fit in, otherwise it will seem awkward. Best thing to do is just let it flow, if you plan things, it won't be the same feeling.

On a more serious note, I would just put my arms around her and stare into her eyes. Its amazing what you can see in someones eyes.
