Older computer of mine needs atleast 1 more stick of 512. I have 2 slots for memory (yes, only 2), on a 2.0 Latency/133MHz and up to a max 2.5 Latency/166MHz, DDR 333 (PC2700) bandwith. I have a question. If i just buy 1 stick of 512 and use the existing stick of 512 will it perform as well as buying 1GB of memory with 2 512 sticks that are just packed together, wasnt sure on the performance difference between those. Or, should I just buy 1 stick of 1GB and put it in with my current 512 and make it 1.5GB isntead of just a single 512 upgrade?
No, they have to be the same speed and stuff. its really complicated, I suggest you get some help. You need to find same speed, same memory size, same everything.
erm, i listed my speed and what my memory was lol. im not completely ignorant, i just dont know as much as people like xelink, defuzion, etc. i was planning on 1 new stick of 512 at the same speed and size (512), but i didnt know if i could be good with just 1 stick or if i needed to buy 2 identical sticks (as in the exact same stick, or both at one time). i really think 1GB total is all ill need, im planning on spewing off alot of templates (about 40 at $65) to buy a brand new computer as my mom wont help me out unfortunately
you should be able to get by with justbuying a single stick of 512mb DDR400 ram(it scales downward and should be fine). I seriously doubt that any system which came with DDR333 has a memory controller capable of running memory in dual channel. It is a possibility. all socket 939 systems and some of more recent(as in 1.5 years[can't give an exact number though as I'm not that familiar with Intels netburst lineup in terms of boards]) Intel systems are capable of running memory in dual channel. No socket A(462)[could be wrong, bu never heard of it] and s754 system supports running memory in dual channel if you're system is a bit older then It is unlikely that it would be capable of running in dual channel. if in doubt, CPUz and then google theboard name.
thanks, but after talking to my mom it seems likely ill get atleast $1000 for a new computer, but im going for $1500, so you guys may see me asking for a new build. Since i probably wont get it for another couple of weeks, would you recommend waiting and getting a conroe or just sticking with an amd am2 board and potentially upgrading in november/december?
I'm not all to knowledgeable about the conroe vs amd chips, but from virtually everything I've seen (inlcuding benchmarks) you'd definatly want to go with the conroe.
You won't be "waiting" for the Conroe, it comes out it... 2 days. Whether you want to go AMD and get K8L is really up to you. The two chips will be on realativly equal ground, each being better then the other at a few things. Only reason I would go with AMD is because they have a better Upgradability... But once you get K8L, i owuldnt be expecting many upgrades.
yeh, conroe is supposed to be out likenow... moment i get hoem from work tomorrow I'm going on a newegg refreshing frenzy...
Yes I beleive Conroa came out a little while ago, not sure if it's widley available yet though, it would definatley be a good processor choice though, it pwns everything currently on the market.
so you guys are saying if i decide to get a new system for $1500 to go with the conroe? what would the price be between a conroe system and an amd system as for performance for the price? do conroes have the same overheating problems as previous intel systems did?
inte's whole marketting gimmick with conroe is low energy useage that and heat go hand in hand, so you shouldn't worry, they should run slightly cooler than the athlons
so how much are the conroes sexpected to be at release and how long after release would you expect them to be available in general without alot of people swarming to grab em? lol
