Sorry, I posted in the wrong section. I guess now I'll write a review.

Silent hill was a great thriller. It really seemed to capture me, and gave you a real since of each the main character's view. I loved the camera effects, they really gave it a creepy look. I was disturbed by all the monsters, and it wasn't nothing short of gorey. The only part that I didn't like, was at the end. It was very confusing for me. I still don't understand. That kind of made me mad. I've never played the video game, so maybe that makes a difference. But overall I'd say it's a 7/10.

If anyone would like to explain the ending to me, that'd be great.

The video games of silent hill are so huge and so complex, it's impossible to condense the entire storyline in 3 hours. Though, i must say, the movie stayed true to the games for the most part and was awesome. If you want to know more about the story, i suggest playing the games. They're well worth it.

I agree I thought the SH movie was great, and the games are classic (can't wait for SH5!) Anyway just to answer your question right quick, the DVD release is scheduled for August 22, 2006.

I was a little confused too, and I'm useless when it comes to theories, but I browsed IMDB for an answer, and one post had someone who seemed to know what they were talking about. I'll just post his posts with the info on it, since if I link it you have to register to see it.

Silent Hill is a very complex film to sum up simply, but to answer your questions directly:

No, Rose and "Sharon" are not dead. According to the director:

(In Silent Hill) You don't die, it's a zone between life and death. If one day I make a Silent Hill 2, following on this Silent Hill, I'd address these metamorphosis" -Christophe Gans

While physically Rose believes she has driven out of Silent Hill, it is evident in the end that she is still trapped in the foggy dimension of it. We understand from interviews with Gans that this realm is a Purgatory of sorts:

"In the film I have to transcribe hell and purgatory. The Darkness is hell and of course the Foggy Dimension is Purgatory." -Christophe Gans

The reason Rose and "Sharon" remain trapped in the Purgatory Dimension because of Rose's decision to help Dark Alessa exact her revenge on the Cult. Contrary to what the Cult believes, Dark Alessa is not a demon, but another incarnation of Alessa herself, who Gans describes as

an adult woman who also exists as two little girls, good and bad doubles representing who she was when she was hurt.-Christophe Gans

In helping Dark Alessa, she has allowed Alessa to reunify the split halves of her soul (Sharon and Dark Alessa). We see this reunification happen on screen when Sharon disobeys Rose and doesn't close her eyes and sees Dark Alessa ascending the ladder towards her. So at the end of the movie, Sharon is Sharon at all, but a fully reincarnated (for lack of a better term) Alessa Gillespie. Chris, Rose's husband, cannot see them because they now exist on completely different level of reality, a different dimension as it were. If you're interested in learning about the scientific basis of Alternate Dimension/Realities, I suggest you pick up a copy of The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, which discusses String Theory as it pertains to this topic.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well for starters I never said they're stuck their as "a direct result of Sharon disobeying Rose", I said they're stuck there as a result of Rose repeatedly endangering her daughter's life for the ultimately selfish choice of going to extreme lengths to keep her with her, when in the end she probably should have been institutionalized as per the doctor's suggestions.

If you want to know why then, well "Simple answer": it's apparent if you just watch the film and have played the games. It's all the proof you need.

    1. Rose cannot leave Silent Hill in the begining. Anytime she tries, whether on foot or by car, she sees a huge, impassable hole in the ground.

    2. After slowly learning the truth of what happened in Silent Hill and what and who her daughter really is, she agrees to help "Dark Alessa" exact her revenge on the Cult by giving her physical entrance to the Church.

    3. In doing this, she unwittingly reunites "Dark Alessa" and Sharon. This is apparent not only because of what you see when Sharon opens her eyes and sees Dark Alessa ascending the ladder toward her, but because of her behavior afterwards (the way she looks at Dahlia, how she acts in the car, how she acts when they're "back" in the house). Rose is of course, completely oblivious to all this.

    4. Rose "leaves" Silent Hill in her car only with Alessa's permission. When she first attempts to the car won't start. The camera pans to Sharon/Alessa who obviously makes it happen, which recalls Dahlia's first line of dialogue that "Only the Dark One opens and closes the door to Silent Hill."

    5. The Home that Rose returns to is of course not the same one in the "Real World" that Christopher exists in. This recalls parts of Silent Hill 3 and 4 where Silent Hill is less a locality and more a state of being, in the same way Heather experiences a Nightmare World in Non-Silent Hill localities (the Mall, the Subway, etc.) as does Henry (The South Ashfield Apartment Building, Subways, etc.)

My theroy is tht they are stuck in a sort of "Pergatory" place and can reach the real world (i dont no how though)....as you may have noticed, at the very end they go into the house leaving the door open and the hudband gets up and closes it...makes one think about what is realllly going on...you may also see some of this in the post above....but all of this is my ideas and thoughts, none of it was taken from the post above
