Why, oh why, would you even think of buying one of those oem piece of ---- computers? There is nothing good about them. Here, I'll go ahead and build you a computer for around $600.

Let's start with the processor, which by far, is more important then a big hard drive, or "lots" of ram.
Intel Pentium D 805. ($115) (Dual-core for those that don't know what D stands for). Great overclcoker, and a great processor for one on a budget.

    Next, the motherboard:
    ASUS P5RD2 ($73)

    RAM:
    OCZ Gold Series 2x 512MB ($93)

    Gfx Card:
    Radeon x800gto ($90)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814131007

    Hard Drive(s):
    2x Western Digital Caviar 120 GB ($118)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822144414

    Case:
    Aspire X-Plorer ($75)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811144100

    CD/DVD Drive:
    NEC CD/DVD R-RW ($30)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16827152058

    Total: $594

Rapes the daylights out of those crap computers.

You have to buy Windows XP and yes, you have to install it yourself or get someone else to.

Those are just parts, meaning hardware. The software, you have to install.

Some software comes with Windows XP anyways.

dont get the mobo nor the processor why on the mobo cuz u cant expand on it + u wont get the speed out of ur ram due to the fact that it does not have the abled to go in to dual channel mode

    get this mobo instead
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813153041
    $85

    and this processor -
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819116224
    $94

that mobo is good cuz it has the abled to go duel channel on ram and + u can + it is able to go sli if u wanted to game

drop the other 120Gb hard drive u dont really need it

gfx card the x800gto is pretty good but if u wish to one day use sli get this the 7600GT
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814130017
then later on down the road u can buy another one and but in sli mode

and if u do plan on doing sli drop the psu in the case and buy this one
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817709004

and that will all will make a very very good gaming rig for someone on a budget

He said he wanted multitasking. The P4 is a horrid processor, why the hell would you even say to get that. The mobo i suggested supports ddr2 667. He said he wanted a computer that 'has a big hard drive size'. There for you can drop the 7600 because he won't have any money, and the extra psu, he wouldnt have money for either.

And just a suggestion.. like so you don't look like an idiot, make sure your motherboard // cpu suggestions are compatable. The motherboard doesnt support 533 FSB, only 800/1066.

It doesn't sound like he will be doing much upgrading either, so i doubt he would be going for SLi.

AND yet another thing. Please look at the 7600 specs compared to the x800gto specs. For $80 more you get 100 Mhz faster core, 600 Mhz faster Memory, but yet only 128 bit interface compared to 256 on the x800. And the x800gto is a good overclocker, no? So it would give him all the preformance he would be looking for, at a lower price, and with an extra hard drive.

I believe on some x800gto's (i know the x800gto limited editions can) you can unlock 4 more pipelines, putting it at 16 pipelines, and more the preformance of the x850gt. Seems like a good deal to me.
