Yes, I know you get these questions all the time, but I value your opinions.

I am looking to build a new PC that is under £550 ($1000) and am trying to find some realistic components.

I do not play games on the PC, so cheap/integrated graphics will be fine (got to cut back somewhere), as will integrated sound (I can always get a soundcard later). The PC would mainly be used for graphic design, 3D modelling, programming and general work etc, so I was thinking along the lines of an AMD X2, and 1GB RAM. In order to have these, I need to cut down on other areas - I do not require speakers, mouse, keyboard or an OS (Linux user) or a particularly large hard drive - 80-120GB should do for the moment as I can always upgrade). However, I do need a (single) DVD writer and a monitor (preferably 17inch).

The problem I have is finding good budget components - in particular, an AM2 motherboard that is competent , a case and a PSU.

If anyone can recommend some components (or a full system if you're feeling really helpful) then that would be great.

    Thankyou very much in advance.

    -ChiefNX ^_^

The PC would mainly be used for graphic design, 3D modelling

If it is to be used for that i would get a graphics card even if it is a rubbish one as the integrated one won't do much for you.

    i would get a conroe (aka Core 2 duo) i would sugest a e6700
it out preformed the top of the line amd fx 62 and it is only 500 USD. i just thought you should keep this in mind. but you really should get a go gfx card, i would sugest a NVIDIA Quadro really good card for any 3d stuff. well that is my $0.02, good luck with the build

If you do not live in the US, then you will have to find the products else where; as I may not be very lazy, but I am too lazy for seraching between 12 different sites.

    Monitor: ($150) Acer 17" Black 8ms 1280x1024 max reso.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16824009070

CPU: (Give or take from $180) Intel Core 2 Duo E'6300.

    Motherboard: ($175) Abit Socket T
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813127235
(Motherboard will probably change because I'm assuming more will come out towards the 'real' Conroe release. Price will probably lower also.

    Graphics Card: ($90) Radeon x800gto.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814131007
(For graphics rendering you will wish you have a graphics card. This product is a steal at $90, you'll be happy.)

    RAM: ($190) OCZ 2 x 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 800. 4-4-4-12.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820231073
(Good overclocking, 2 GB of ram will last you awhile.)

Hard Drive: ($82) Western Digital Cavier. SATA 3.0GB/s.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822136010
(Suggest spliting that into two paritions, 50 GB and 200 GB.)

    Case: ($75) Aspire X-Plorer.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811144100
(I own it and I like it. The PSU has run fine with my Pentium D, (which, might I add, uses A LOT of power, compared to your Core 2 Duo, witch uses a fraction) 3 hard drives, gfx card, floppy, cd/dvd drive, 7 LED lights.)

    CD/DVD: ($30) NEC CD/DVD-R/RW
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16827152058

    Total: $972.

If you have a current CD/DVD-R/RW on your computer, you can take that out of the build and just take it from your old computer.

only 500?? That is half of his build. Think for a moment, gosh.

a Quadro? You're ----ing joking? The cheapest one on newegg that is worth buying is $600. And they suck? 8 Pipelines (maybe more that can be opened), 128-bit interface. Something has got to be wrong with those prices.

So he should get a e6700, around $500, and a Quadro, around $600. That equals $1100. Is his computer just suposed to run on a Gfx card and a CPU?

i really think the e6700 is the way to go, it will last much longer and it is a much better chip.

hey man seriously dont be a d*** you dont have be an a** you can just sugest a diffrent thing and say why. i think that yuo should put the most of your money into a CPU. and ram. plus i was thinking ahead, you should not buy a mid system right now because there are no really economical Mobo's out there right now. soon they are realsing a mid of the line mobo for about $100. dude Quadro do not suck, they are actualy teh best for 3D stuff, if you do alot of 3d then you should look in to them. but i was just sayign in the feture. it is a big investment but you should like them. i know they arnt cheap i probly should not have posted it in this topic, but we just got some of them in this week at work and they fly.

so dude, if you can try to get the e6700 because it will last you much longer , tehn the 6300, but the 6600 is a very nice chip as well

The E6700 is a waste of money in my opinion, overclock the e6600, which is 200buxx cheaper and you have the same perforance. For the videocard, just get a normal one, do not use intergrated graphics, they wont be good enough. The x800GTO will be suffiecient enough.

The Conroe's are very overclockable. the e6300 will last just as long at the e6700. All you are paying for is the extra 2 MB L2 Cache, which isnt needed as much now considering Netburst is gone. The e6300's will become obsolete at around the same time as the e6700. Either way, both chips will last a long enough time for him to build up more money for a new build and the distant future.

And yes, by the time the rest of the Conroe's are released, I would expect quite a few more bad axe boards to be released, there off lowering the price of them.

ps- can anyone see issues with my build?

    1) If you get an AMD system, you need to be shot.
    2) If you get an AMd system, and it's socket 939, you need to die a painful death.
