The whole rebooting durning defrag might have something to do with it, eh? Probably corrupted the stuff. If all else fails, see if there is some software for your hard drive and try installing that in reformatting it.

Usually when my hard drive doesnt show up at all, it's my ATA ----ing up. I just switch the cables out and then it works. It's wierd but it works.

a version of Linux called Knoppix which runs of a CD will probably be able to detect it. If u can run a backup program then get a new hdd or something, then simply copy the backup there.

Dont know if the registry will update itself or not?

I thought you did a magic trick and something happened wrong : /
But now I know what you are talking about... this exact same thing happened to me. I tried everything everyone said but nothing happened so I just reformatted the hard drive. Sucks but it happens.

sounds like your partition table hit the dust or soemthing to the affect thereof...

the thing I don't ge, why is everyone so obbssessed with defragging, on NTFS and ETX3 the need is truely minimal.

    you have SMART enabled?
    mess with every BIOS option.
    Try using another port..

if those don't do anthing then no idea...

you can try others alternative of fragmenting the disk with other programs instead of the default one, since it is gone.
