Computer = 4 years old PSU = dead (i think, read below) New computer or new PSU? My computer no longer starts up anything, I checked the processor for any thermal paste and it was fine, replaced it with another computer's processor I have thats practically brand new and nothing, so I know its not the processor, which leads me to believe its the battery, but when I start it up, or press the power button I get NO response. What do you recommend? Spending the $50-100 on a PSU for a 4 year old computer or just buying a new computer since mine is virtually dead anyways... and if it isnt, its obsolete... If you suggest a new computer, I have about a $2000-2500 spending limit. I dont need an OS, it iwll be graphics/gaming oriented, I will need a monitor, keyboard and mouse (mine as well, since mine is trashed, and I would like to look atleast remotely well with the case (which I prefer black or silver). Definately an LCD, 1280x1024 resolution minimum for the monitor capabilities (17", isnt it?)
Wow, thats a lot of money. You shouldnt have a problem. Any chance you could wait for July 26th for the Conroe's? If you can't wait that long, i would just suggest the Woodcrest.. i know its a server processor, but it's going to be very good (maybe not as good as OCing) but its FSB is good, and that's something that Intel is starting to catch up on. Or else, just get a very nice AM2 system... with like the cheapest Athlon 64 and when K8L comes out in Q4, get a new processor then.
naw, i cant do anything on my moms lap top for any extended period of time and without a computer for a few more weeks you have no idea how mad my mom would be because id be purposefully trying to piss her off lol. its going ot take a few hours to get it ready, but if she doesnt want to cooperate i could always just take her credit card number and such and... well hmm... lol I am not planning on OCing until the warrantees expire and i dont mind getting an X2 or opteron processor, even tho they will be vastly inferior to the new conroes that are coming out, but meh, it will work for another 4 years i suppose
That's why i said to get a cheap Athlon 64 or Sempron 64 until K8L comes out in Q4 (December). Then you can just upgrade then to the new processors
Wait for conroe processors to come out third week into July I'd say.. Are you building or getting a prebuilt?..
i cant, i mean... i wouldnt mind buying a cheap intel for now, as the only game i really play right now is GW and then in a month or so i wouldnt mind upgrading to the conroe... and im building, im sick of prebuilts, come with too much BS loaded on them, i have all the software i need, and thats all that i want on my computer.
Well, prebuilt without anything on the HD?.. it's possible, I wasnt saying any ---- things like Dell or alienware... things like..ibuypower.com..and theres another site somewhere I gotta find that was supposed to be good too...you custom choose parts, they build it, you enjoy.. and you can choose to not get an OS to save some money..
naw, its more than alright, i know my fair share about computers and building and such... im just trying to figure out what to do, i was planning on buying a conroe, which makes me want to buy everything just with a cheap intel processor until the conroes come out next month, then ill be up to date, but like i said, i need a monitor/keyboard/mouse, so thats like $300-400 right there.
I see you already learned not to get a prebuild very good. I'd say just get a simple PSU in a secondhandshop for low money and try to get your PC to work. So you atleast have a backup PC. If you cant wait till the conroe comes out, get like the others said, a low budget processor (sempron, amd64) and upgrade in Q4. You wont be able to get a cheap pentium D now because there arent many motherboards with the 975x chipset. For the conroe you need intels 975 chipset or higher so If you take a pentium D on an other chipset, you wont be able to use the conroe, without buying a new motherboard. (correct me if im wrong). Edit: Just took a look @ newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....SubCategory=280 There are already boards witht the chipset so you have to choose one of those. For the monitor, I'd say pick yourself a nice one, under 8ms, 17" or better and a resolution of 1280x1024 or better. Mouse and keyboard also your choiche.
well, if im going to wait till december for a new AMD processor to come out im going to have enough money to upgrade then, so i dont mind using a relatively high priced modern amd processor, x2 or opteron or something...
if you do that... would you give me the x2 or opteron when you're done with it ill give you all my credits
id probably drop it in another comptuer of mine or sell it on ebay... anyone else have any doubts that its the PSU? thats the only thing i can make of it, ive tried the cord in different socket, ive tried multiple cords, ive checked my processor, ive switched my processor, ive made sure everything is connected and the only other thing i can think of is the PSU...
Well, what kind of motherboard do you have now? Model, etc, what are its allowable specs. And what processor do you have now? And what processor did you switch it out with when you were testing it?
no clue whatsoever in the broken computer, its an HP and i havnt bothered to research exactly whats in it outside its a socket a board... and i switched it out with another processor of the exact type... amd athlon xp 3200+ i believe... old school lmao...
Its still beter then my 400mhz celeron spare Okay, Im talking to Dementia now. What is better for him? A high end AMD now and for the coming 4 yeards, or a lew end intel and switch to conroe?
