I'm trying to download a new Service pack for my computer, a Windows XP Service Pack 2. While installing, this pops up:

It says it's being used by other applications, but The page I'm downloading from is the only thing open! I don't know what could be using this file.

Does anyone have info on this file? It seems to be an important one, and it can't be deleted, so I don't know what to do =(

I need this service pack installed or my new CS2 won't run...I'm, upgrading from 7.0, since I'm desperately in need of scattered smudging i see everyone doing...

    Halp please.

Why is it dangerous? Should I just stick with Service Pack 1?

Also, yeah, I turned off my comp and I'm trying it now, andit's still not working =(

Also, how do you boot into safe mode with networking? Also, how do you get out of it?

    It's not dangerous...

    (where have you been, Skullmonkey?)

SP2 fills an immense number of vulnabilities (sp?) and security holes.

I run SP2 on all my systems, no problem..

    ctrl + alt + delete

then go to the Processes tab

then find cmd.exe, and hit end process

try to run the set up quickly cause the program using it might try to use it fast after you close it

Scaring the kids there skully :D

Anyways go to task manager > End process > cmd.exe

Something is using command prompt - So check in task manager and end it - It wont ruin anything anyways

Go to run > type cmd and you will find out its MS-DOS Command Prompt :D

I hope it helps and If it doesnt sorry :(

That would work... but not if in this case its a virus running cmd.exe. which is where Safe mode with networking is the better choice.

actually it can be "dangerous" it fixes a lto of things but it can also break a lot of installations, and there are known drivers issues. my wireless router needed new drivers(or to be unplugged) or the system would start restarting infinitely in a loop. though fortuately, if such an even does occur it's not too hard to start in safemode and the uninstall SP2...

-THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SP2-

To all the people out there that dont install SP2, the only thing you are proving is that you are vulnerable to many viruses/worms on the web.
Using the excuse "I dont want to pay for it" or "SP1 is my anti-virus/firewall" are just pathetic. Making sure you have the most recent windows updates are very vital to your safe well being (except WGA).

As I was saying before, boot into safe mode with networking (tap F8 or F2, sometimes DEL and you should end up at a black screen with white/gray letters and select "Safe Mode with Networking") then open up windows update and you should be good.
