I got a very low end pc.

    Runs win XP pro.
256 mb ram (I just put in a 128mb stick but it's unrecognized i guess)
    intel celeron 1.8ghz

    Which to choose?...

I need to cut down on the electricity bills here...

depends onuseage, hibernate is the same as turning it completely off(but everything loads up as you left it) standby is ultra-low power useage typically less than 10W(compared to a 1000+W microwave... or a refridgerator) also note that turning a comuter on physically uses power too. IMO if you turn it on and off a lot, use standby, if you are to not touch it for a while use hibernate or turn it off.

Can't you actually turn it off instead?
That is if you won't be going back on it for a while eg when you go to bed.

hibernate is the same as turning it off but it saves the user setup.

standby uses very little energy to use the computer, furthmore it avoids electric surges. Also noe that even when i computer is off it uses approximately 3W of power to mantain network connectivity, dont' beleive me, check the ethernet port for LED activity. That stated VERY little energy is wasted in standby, you could leave a computer on standby for an entire year and it would most liekly only cost a few dollars, under 10.

so i leave it on standby and no fans nothing :) uses a bit, but cant hear ---- so i love it

At the end of the night i always turn my comp and router off at the switch...ive heard routers and modems (all on same plug strip thing) shouldnt be turned off fully at the switch.

Why would this effect anything at all, i dont like leaving it all on at night does it damage anything in some way?

HAHA my parents turn the internet off at the switch at 10:15 PM so we don't look at porn and will go to bed (crazy christians). Well I would say that you can probably go into hibernation and cut off the power and it will still reload all the work you have up at the time (rendering.... I have not tried it though so do not know). When I put my computer on stand by the computer is still running with the fans on -_-. (custom comp)

I know your feeling, cloud, and others...

my parents are so behind in technology, except my dad, that they they think something will catch fire or melt in my computer..

    ^
*your computer will shut down before any of this will happen*

So, to stiop this, I unplugged all lights from the front of my computer, blocked out all lights on my speakers, moitors, etc., and put my Dell on stand by whenever not using it. It's whisper quiet.. I just turn off this computer because it is so loud...

    back on topic:

Hibernation: it turns your computer completely off, saving all your memory to hard disk, to allow a quicker boot-up, and will remember anything if you are going to leave it off for a long time.

Standby: uses less power than a light bulb. by a touch of your mouse or keyboard (you can set it in Device Manager), it 'wakes up' and loads everything back on.

I want it so it goes into standby after 2 hours of un-usage...

and then eventually 1 hour probly, matters how things go...

Its only for overnight and during school... so it wont be used from either...
    1AM - 2PM
    or
1AM - 7AM and then 7:10AM - 2PM (sometimes I print stuff before school, or sister checks messages and such..ya know..)

Then occassionally a parent will use the computer..that'll be the hardest part of getting them to like it..of course I'll just mention it saves them money :D

I still cant decide, I'll see what the rest of the family likes..

i personally have mine set for auto-standby after like half an hour and comp screen off after 15 mins... works well for me.

tewll them leaving a standard 80W light bulb on for 10 mins uses about as much if not a fair amount more power than leaving it on standby for an hour

Ive never used any of the features i just turn it off when im not using it, im not worried about start up times or anything as i can be browsing the internet 38 seconds after pressing the ON switch. Maybe i should use one of these features might give them a try.

technically it is argued that standby uses less energy than turning it on or off as, again, a lot of energy is used to turn it on. Monitors on the other hand don't have astandby and are relatively immune to surges so most people recomend turning them off.

the typical rule is that if you would turn it on or off mroe than once a day standby is wiser, faster cheaper better.

In standby mode does it have to be left on at the plug still?

I always turn all the plugs and everything off when i go out or anything thats all.

for standby power still needs to be supplied as normal. assuming you have an active plug in it standby uses only 2 or 3 times as much energy as when its "off"
