linux distors(like 10,000 of them all diferent literally) - very efficienct, unlikely to crash, SOME require a lot fo work in comand prompt enviroments, other's do not(some claim it's eactually easier and faster to install things this way, I agree to an extent) native gaming support is minimal though people have cracked counterstrike, WoW, and DoomIII amoung others(in fact all three of those games run better in linux than on windows even though they aren't native). UT04 is native in linux.

windows- typically the easiest to get used to of any OS. This comes at the price fo stability, security, efficiency and eyecandy(yes if configured properly most of linux is pretty)

Mac OSX- runs it's own proprietory(or pseudo proprietory) hardware, costs a lot, but combines many of the advantages of linux and windows together, quite pretty on the whole. harder to hack game support for than on linux

solaris and other unix deviations- very efficient typically used for servers and workstations, typically used in non x86 enviroments though not alaways. Shares many elements of linux distros and of mac OSX(as all are unix based)
