after a certain point does it matter? do you notice a performance deficit? I'm on a 15$ a month DSL connection at ym dad's but I almost always have the lowest ping when I play a game...(not that a ping under 50 or so really matters, the average responce time of a human is about 100ms)

furthermore how do youknow that their server's weren't busy or bandwidth restrained?

Yes, cable does that. specially adelphia; speaking from experience. I used to use adelphia cable... now im on Bellsouth DSL. I get much better pings in CS, but horrid dowwnload speeds from websites / etc.

You've probably got spyware or a virus. Just run some scans on your computer and maybe defrag it if you have the time.

p.s. I'm on 2mb cable for £18/month and look at the speeds I get, what speed is your internet?

try stopping all programs that may be using the internet, especially p2p and bit torrent services

    EDIT:
    ds:1906.5 Kbps

    us: 233.6 K bytes/sec

    on my plus.net 2mbps

try using http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/ they seem pretty acurate

a ping of 80 still shouldn't affect you all too much, again average human responce time is 100... also add in that at 70-100Hrz refresh rate, you also have "delay" from your monitor

as for lag, it's either something you're running or your ISP is crap/overloaded...

what causes your lag though is upload speeds... upload affects gaming far more than DL... I can be DLing a ----load of stuff and my gaming won't be affected, but as soon as I start uploading something... bam up to 600....

hdsl is better suited for gaming than ADSL... though again at ym dad's my ADSL connection is beyond adequate and is compareable to my mother's cable connection...

Hmmm, I never trust dlsreports for speed tests. There servers are always overloaded, and a lot of the times, it is not very accurate. I pay $29.95/mo for my connection, and here's my results:

To get results from a server that's not overloaded and will probably be a better representation, go here.

I ran the ookla test, and got the following results:
    Download: 4799kbps
    Upload: 536kbps

    on ZD Net i get
    Download: 474kbps

    With CNet Testing, i get:
    Download: 2637.4 kbps

    And with bandwidthtest.com i get:
    Download: 4mbps

    With speakeasy i get:
Download Speed: 4817 kbps (602.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 356 kbps (44.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

    And with Toast.net i get:
    Download: 3481kbps

And, finally with beeline i get:
    Download: 2048kbps

All tests were run equally, so...

you cannot rely on tests for your speed.

    Ask yourself:

Do you lag while playing FPS.

Are you happy with your customer support.

AND are you happy with your internet performance.
