Hey, I just installed Ubuntu and successfully set it up to dual boot with xp (im amazed i didnt screw something up) and I was wondering if there was some way i could access my windows partition and get my music onto linux, and i remember hearing some way of getting MP3 playback in ubuntu (alot of my music is mp3), thats basicly all my questions for now, all my hardware ect... is working fine, and i must say linux seems pretty cool (and way faster than my xp)
lol, viper. Linux is better, too bad few games are made for it. I think Ubuntu has an mp3 player.. look around the programs. to port your mp3 files over... I'm not 100% on this, but are you using the same hard drive that windows is on, or a seperate one?
Same Hard Drive, and i dont play PC games at all anyway, im strictly a console gamer, if i ever play games its on my dads XPS

first thing first, get the thing(linux) configured, search for automatix and this can do a lot for you... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405 next, look into mounting your windows NTFS drive. you won't be able to save anything to it, but you will be able to read from it. Personally I keep an EXTRA FAT32(which is like everything compatable) partition setup for file swapping EDIT: FYI technically in the US getting mp3 codecs is slightly illegal(though very easy to do and very hard to get caught for) thoughbyou can use XMMS for free which has built in codecs and works very well... I personalyl like XMMS very similar to winamp...

shyt, i got some music and i can play it with XMMS, but no sound comes from my speakers, may ubuntu hasnt been able to detect them or something?
it would eb a matter of detecting your soundcard/onboard sound. go to the far right selection on the taskbar, then look around up there for a sound option and see if it's disabled over there. I don't have ubuntu installed at this momnet(corrupted discs sadly) so I can't really walk yout through it 100% but look in there and see if sound is disabled, if it isn't mess with ALSA garbage and check ubuntu's forums... system>>preferences>>sound
i has my sound card defected, but im still not getting sound from anything at all, my sound card is Intel ICH5
do you have onboard sound? if so AC97 is typically autodetected, if you don't have onboard(or that is onboard) you'de have to ask on ubuntuforums as I simply don't know, I'm a relative beginner with linux as well.
and so am I. I am downloading Kubuntu, which is Ubuntu, but with a KDE desktop instead of Gnome. when I get it downloaded and installed, I'll help ya out..
