Hi every one i was looking around for some servers when i decided to build my own but now i just dont know where to start and what to buy so if any 1 can help me with building this server that would be great i would like to have anywhere from 300 -800 gb harddrive space 1gb to 4gbs of ram a intel processer with anywhere from 3.0ghz or higher a large case with 4bays or more a gfx card - Nvedia or ATi card (not really specfic) and to make it fun all under 1200$
its a server. use integrated graphics. Merged Post: but yeah, ill start looking around for the parts and give you a list soon. Beware, many ppl are gonna yell at you and try to pursade you to get an AMD Opteron compared to the Xeon's
I can build one for you for that price. And I promise, I won't yell at you to get an AMD system. For servers, I prefer the Xeon. But like johndapunk said, don't waste money on a gfx card, it's not necesarry when running a server. I build PC's as a side-job and am MCSE and CCNA qualified, so you won't have to worry about anything. Also, I can get cheaper prices than what's listed on tigerdirect and newegg a lot of the times because I do own a business as well. Let me know if you're interested.
Under $1200... Hm... Have you considered using Apples serving solutions? Like getting an old PowerMac and shoving a bigger drive and OSX: Server onto it? I don't really have any experience doing this; just a thought.
here ya go. I finished collecting all the data. There weren't many Socket 771 Motherboards, so I couldnt pick any of the Depsey's (those have 1066 Mhz FSB and around 3.2 Ghz) but i figured 2 relativly good processors would suffice. Doubt you'll use this, but it's a start.
That's a really good deal on those hard drives!! I need to get me a new one..my 120 GB drive is about 80% full.
a bigger storage system? you mean case? Server cases are suposed to be towers, everyone knows that. And please, anyone posts that do not pertain to this subject, go away. We don't care if you noticed the nice prices on the hard drives.
it is better to get an AMD opteron setup... at 1.8GHz compared to a 3.0GHz Xeon it was more or less an even match... but since then the cost fo opterons came down... a lot... furthermore AMD's HHT bus and integrated memory controller yeild better system bandwidth and latencies... which is very important for server use. the question though... budget? EDIT: under 1200... hah, you're looking for a very low end, single socket server...
What a call. Xelink, the build i gave would work well. maybe not as well as dual-opterons, but if he cuts back on a hard drive and drops to 1.5 GB memory he would have under $1200. plus i just like the thought of having two seprate processors, even sounds sexy
u really dont need that much space if your running a game server but otherwise such as ftp thats good u dont need a great graphix card for just a server unless your planning on playing on it but i would go for a high processor such as a amd x2 4800+
