I don't know much about Motherboards or CPUs...Right now I have a stock Dell Mobo and a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz CPU...
I recently bought an e-GeForce 6600GT AGP video card and it doesn't seem to be performing at it's best and a friend told me it was probably that the Motherboard couldn't take it.

If you have any suggestions for a good Mobo and CPU they just have to be AGP compatible, compatible with DDR RAM.

    Thanks

if the motherboard couldnt take it, it wouldnt run at all. i doubt it, but your agp might be something low like 2x/4x, that may be why. erm, how long have you had it?

when do you want this by?

I just got the card but the mobo is a few years old
and whenever is fine, no rush or anything

    Mainboard: Asrock 939-Dual SATA 2

CPU, a AMD 939 socket and you can change easily the gfx card because this mainboard also has a PCI-E slot :)

Yup goldman has the right idea, that is what I suggest aswell. I highly doubt core 2 duo boards will support agp.

That's also what I was thinking, just didn't know if they made them.
What would be a good CPU to go with it?

Does anyone actually know a good site that compares/benchmarks Intel vs. AMD CPUs?

In my opinion Tom's hardware is the best place for CPU comparision.

Atm, go for AMD rather than intel. They are better...however, wait a little while and the conroe cpu comes out and those will be better to go with...

Since that motherboard is socket 939 ... it's for AMD processors. I suggest getting a dual core processor as well. That motherboard is good because it has both AGP and PCI-Express slots on it ... so when you want to upgrade your computer ... you can just buy a new PCI-Express graphics card ... but for now you can save some money if you use your 6600GT.

    Motherboard:

AMD Operton 165 (If you want to overclock alot):

    AMD X2 3800+

Also ... if you would be willing to buy an Intel mobo and get this processor ... I hear that you can get it over 4 GHz on it with good cooling (like Zalman CNPS9500) On Tom's Hardware ... they got it to 4.1 GHz:

    Pentium D 805:

    instal drivers...

the end. your CPU isn't that great but you shouldn't be having too many issues, i mean I've heard HL2 plays acceptably on a 2.4GHz northwood so...

also check your ram 256mb doesn't cut it.

I can clarify the HL2 runs quite well (68 fps average) on my P4 2.4 Ghz and my Radeon 9800Pro :D
