Well im thinking of putting linux on my Step Dad's dads computer im fixing for him but how do i put it on? like im prety sre there is a free linux version out and basicly how do i set it up?
There are hundreds of versions of linux (called distros) if not thousands. Before you take the plunge and install it as your primary OS, I would reccomend trying out a live cd to see which distro you like best. A list of livd cds can be found here. A more complete list of Linux distros can be found at distrowatch.com. Hope this helps.
Violent, there are many different Distros, not every one id one you or he may not like, try the live cd's...
live cd's are the actual Operating System that you can run sorely off the cd, no need for a hard drive, or floppy disk. It is like a preview of the bigger OS that you have to install. Linux installs as easily as Windows XP, just read and choose... I suggest trying Ubuntu or Fedora Code 4.. those are the best to start out with
you download the ISO's. for fedora core 4, go here. ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/linux/Fedora/core/4/i386/iso/ download the disc's 1-4 that are NOT SRPMS. Fedora Core 5: ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/linux/Fedora/core/5/i386/iso/ download 1 thru 5
from my experience, ubuntu is very user friendly as compaerd to other linux distros... installation is a breeze, significantly easier than gentoo(which is an absolute ****) there's even a 3rd party application which helps you install mroe or less everything you would need straight off the bat... save a lot of effort, takes some time to DL everything but it's all automated(hence the name automatix), also ubuntu has excellent comunity support and a sarter guide. No matter which version of linux youg et though, note that it WILL take a bit fo time to get used to... you can tweek more or less everything as opposed to idiot proof windows, also you spend a bit of time messing with a comand promt like application called terminal(in Gnome) which is similar to dos albiet SLIGHTY more user friendly
wow really? you mean, like instead of getting a bad version of linux, we would get a good version? jesus christ, i dont know what gamerenders would do without a brain like yours. maybe have like 1 million less posts if all the idiots such as yourself stop posting. for gaming you should just stay with windows. linux takes a little time to get used to.. more then 4 days in my case (fedora 4.) specially coming from a windows platform my whole life. ^^ i agree with defuzion bwt.
