a good starting guitar is a fender strat. that what i started with. i would actaully not recommend a gibson sg for a starter because there worth around 1200 dollors. if you want something that looks and sound like a gibson, buy an epiphone. they're imported and a lot cheaper. so either get an epiphone or a fender strat. good luck.

If youve never played teh guitar before id get a fender squir strat (the cheap ones) there not that bad thats what i started with
Slash and Jimmy page are to different players, slash does often use a les paul model but his is very differently adjusted one of the big difference are the pick-ups, jimmy page uses burtsbuckers or something like the newer les pauls have now but slash uses seymour duncan alnico 2's which have two very different tones. (I like the alnicos better =D) Dont listen to anyone telling you to start with a gibson sg or les paul... they are great guitars but terrible for beginners in ways such as, if you dont play much or practice and waste however much you spend on your instrument and I could go on with more negative things and such. I wouldnt go by others opinion unless its someone at the store who you can at least trust in helping without thinking about how much money they can get out of you tell you about the guitars. What I think you should do is go to a store that allows you to try the instruments and even the you dont know how to play yet I suppose since you say you are starting fool around on it see which ones feel comfortable and might sound nice for music you play. As for me I started on an in-the-box strat made by Squier which lasted me great to give me an idea of what tone I wanted out of a guitar and what music im playing. Now I mainly play an Epiphone Les paul standard which is my only other guitar besides the strat. My les paul has great tone and feel to me, though I cant speak for others without knowing them. But what I really want you to know is that an epiphone might not meet to what alot of people say it does, I like mine dont get me wrong but after you play guitar awhile you can realise there is a extremely big difference between gibson and epiphone. They seem the same since epiphone uses gibson models but in my opinion are not alike in any other way shape or form =D
