Use simpler fonts not like angryblue controlled, amke the bg fit the render or vice versa, give the bg some feel to it, and to improve seriously look at some tuts.

    Use tutorials.
Make borders, start with simple 1px black ones.
Here is an example for borders:
    http://www.dark-creations.exoteque.net/for...wtopic.php?t=55
but when it says to do 5px, red, make it 1 px, black to start off.

Get some more brushes from deviantart.com ..try metal cx's I like his..

Use easier fonts to work with, as said before. Things as simple as Arial or Tahoma can work in some sigs.

for quotes or just small fonts, download Visitor from dafont.com

Find a style you like and sick with it, just ask what style a designer used in a sig through PMs. As said don't use crazy fonts, but use like Arial, Times etc (default photoshop fonts).

    Depth and flow are important:
-Depth: lighting, makes the sig look like it has depth, 3D
-Flow: A Black render dosn't usually look good on a bright red background, if an image has good flow it means the eye has an easy time looking at it.

Just read alot of tutorials and ask some designers for tips...but don't pester them if they don't want to help you just move on.
