would this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835106061 work with my opteron 165? i'm not quite sure
okay so here's my entire setup: Antec P180 Case DFI SLI-D(Socket 939) eVGA GeForce 7900GT Antec PSU 550w Opteron 165 G.SKILL 2x1GB ram(DDR 500) Logitech mouse and keyboard(G5 and G15 respectively) WD 250 7200 HDD creative 5.1 speakers i feel like i'm missing something...not a monitor though but anyways, does the opteron 165 work with DFI boards? it says it doesn't on dfi street but i've seen people with them on their systems...hmmm Merged Post: on 2nd thought, OCing scares me, so i'm just going to go with an X2...sound good? any advice there then?
I'm fairly confident that the opteron 165 will work on a DFI board. Technically they are speced the same as the athlon x2s in terms of how they are produced. A lot of motherboards claim(this is all speculation and baed off a guess) not to support them because they dont' design server boards which demand the stability to be up 99.9% of the time, non-stop(even if their boards can handle ti theyn don't want to be forced to back it up in a sense) also, the big typhoon cooler will work with he opteron, it is speced for any 939 processor which the opteron 165 fits into.
It works fine with DFI boards. The X2 processors are basically rebadged Opterons that didn't meet the more comprehensive stability requirements required for the Opteron label. So, they slapped on the Athlon 64 X2 brand and shipped em off. Of course, all the Opterons come with 1MB L2 cache. So, you can say the Toledo X2s are direct descendents of the Opterons. Rejects, if I may say so. As far as the Big Typhoon being the BEST air cooler out there, I beg to differ. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835185001 ^That is the best aircooler out there. I have it and the P180, and it fits perfectly. In fact, it lines up with the P180's rear fan so well that I plan to just remove the Ninja's fan and put it somewhere else. I'm thinking I'll mount it over the RAM modules. G.Skill RAM tends to get pretty hot. Anyway, it's better than the Typhoon, at least by a little bit. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/d.../5-cool_24.html
