Is it possible to get a free server where I can create folders and drop images, files, etc......on there for free? or do you have to purchase it monthly, yearly, etc....

possible, yes: going to happen, no.

you could get just a simple file host for little though, or try one of the crappy webpage hosts likes geocities. geocities is crap though, just get a jump drive you lazy -------.

 

you can win it in sweepstakes, but other than that, no...

you can host your own, tho, bud it would be better if you had T1 or better.

 

well u can NOT get a free dedicated server,

no whm/cpanel


with whm/cpanel extra 20$

and its a linux fedora core 4 or centos

win2k3's are very very expensive...

i recommend dual or quad xeon servers i have 4 and they run awesome

 

you can get free dedicated servers. Trust me I done it.
But you have to put like 10 ads per page, if you turn it into a games thing eg CS the start page has to be spammed with the provider.

 

if you got something other then 56k or something close, just use a local server. specially for just images etc, it doesnt take too much bandwidth. all my sigs are hosted from my webserver. mine is apache + php/mysql server, but you can simply just go get the Apache webserver for images/anything.

 

I want to make a dedicated server... tell me how!!!!!!! I got T1+ don't worry about that.

 

you get a computer that your not using and install an OS on it.. preferbly something that is ment to be a server... like not windows xp home (like a fedora core). you turn it on, and put watever type of server you need to run on it (web server, gaming server).

 

I see... where might a find some good server running programs or whatnot?

 

xeons get bandwidth restrained... unless they're getting like 2000mhz FSB they'll be an issue, heck even opteron servers get bandwidth bottle necks(though not nearly as badly) when you add a ----load of cores the one least affected by a bandwidth bottleneck will always win, assuming all the other major components are equivilent

 

I can get you into someones server. But I can't guarrantee that it's legal.

1. Get a computer with a lot of processing power, alot of RAM, and a large fast Hard Drive
2. Drop a GNU/Linux OS on it, preferably one geard towards servers so it dosent have all that extra stuff slowing you down (such as RedHat or Fedora)
3. Install server software you will need, such as Apache for webservers, MySQL for SQL, etc.
4. Put it on the Internet
