Ok... I finally may have a fully working copy of XP! SO I need to backup, AGAIN! How can I make it so I dont lose any DLL files or whatever... I have a second HD! But I usually have to reinstall things for them to work, or downlaod the dll files and such... So How can I backup, reinstall XP and not go through tons of trouble again?...
what are these dll files for? if you mean drivers, you should have saved the installation files... I'm a bit confused, maybe clear it up a bit...
Well last time i did this, most programs no longer worked that i backed up and put back. DLL files were missing and such... i got a bunch of programs,s o whats the easiest way to transfer everything?...just save install files?
Start>>prgrams>>accessories>>system tools>>backup utility. select save everything and then save the file to your second HDD.
Or you could just move the programs to your second harddrive from the Program Files file, but don't just move them, copy them and paste them into the harddrive, because if you move them out completely you could screw something up and if you descide not to reformat you'd be screwed over royaly.
Bad idea, most of the programs won't work because of the missing registry keys. The easiest way to back up your WHOLE system, including .DLL files and registry keys, is to create an image of your hard drive or the partition that you have your data on. The image is bit for bit, everything that you have on your hard drive will be transplanted to the image, which you can then use to restore your computer to it's perfect state. There are a few programs to do this, the best is probably Norton Ghost.
k, well one, that would be cutting + pasting, and if you just drag your stuff from one hard drive to another, it automaticly Copies + Pastes. Even if you do Cut + Paste to another hard drive, it still has to create all the files again because its a completly new drive.
you COULD copy/paste liek that. a lot of programs will work, as the only registry keys edited are ones making shortcuts on the desktop, quicklinks thing and the program menu. I wouldn't bother though.
