I am going to be setting up a wireless network in my house very shortly. I have a Motorola SB4200 SURFboard Cable Modem with comcast as my ISP. I'm going to be getting This Router, and I'm also going to be purchasing This wireless gaming adapter. But, I am not sure if there is anything else that I'll need to do to get the network running. I know how to set it up from the modem to the router and all of that, but I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything that I need. Thanks in advance
Well, that all depends I suppose. Ofcourse if you want a PCI adapter for your computer (assuming that one is for a Playstation or something). Then I would get one of those ofcourse. Just use the router and you shouldn't have a static IP unless you paid for it with Comcast. So, I think you will be all good. I would get a Cat6 to connect the Wireless to the system (if you need one). I don't use much wireless because of interference and such but, I know that you got the right stuff picked out. <3 Linksys. You said you wanted a network though... so I am taking it you need more than one of those because you want mroe than one device to make a "network" LAN I suppose? I am not sure... if that is not what you are shooting for though, you are set... I would just see how that wireless gaming adapter connects to the actual device and if you need cables with it (I know that sounds stupid).
I have 4 cat 5 cables, are cat 6 that much better? I dont need the card for the PC because the router is going to be right by it so I'll just use a wired connection for that, but I will need to get the laptop cards.
Alright, there you have it. No, if you have a set of four Cat5E then you will be alright. Now, as for the LAN then just go to Properties on "My Computer" and then go to Remote and then check both of those boxes. Then you can go into my computer and choose all the stuff that you want to share off the computer and tada... OR... you can host one computer as a server through a switch and make your computers run off of one system through "Remote Desktop Connection" if you wish. That is found in Start>All programs>Accessories>Comunications and then you will see it. To set up that connection ofcourse you want to go to "Network Connections" in Control Panel then you can "Set up a home or small office network." Then since I suppose you are running Microsoft... since I already referenced all this in Microsoft format, it will walk you through the whole setting up of the network. I would name it something little though. I would also make your computer names for example: It1, It2, It3, or Thing1, Thing 2, Thing 3, or Tiny1, Tiny2, Tiny3... with descriptions for each present place or what the device is and to what it might be sharing. I guess that's all for now though.
