What makes a signature? A bunch of downloaded brushes, a render, some text and a border? The things that you see in the trash can above? Let's define signature:
A printed sheet of paper, folded to size and ready for sewing (ie: large paper folded in half, fourths, eighths, sixteenths, or thirty-seconds). - www.ioba.org/terms.html
    ...
your name written in your own handwriting - wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
"Your name written in your own handwriting..."
How can we call the above (in the trash can) a signature if almost nothing is hand-made? I think that a signature should be at least 75% your own work. This way it is yours (and is very hard to rip...)
So, basically, I want to hear your thoughts on the above comments. Thought away:

(Oh yeah. If you make your own brushes, good for you ^_^ )

So would a superb photomanipulation count as your own work, if you're greantly enhancing the pictures and creating a new composition, or are you suggesting you have to take your own pictures?

Another thing: in real life, a lot of people have very similar handwriting - some signatures look really similar, the only difference is the actual name, wouldnt' that be true for sigs online? Same style, different content? My point is you can't expect every sig to be totally different - there's going to be overlap anyway.

I think that as you get better at making sig's then they become more unique. Starts with the grunge brush splashing and testing and then gradually progresses and then the artist compiles their own style.
    That think ;)

    Yer. I agree.

Experience level, interests and originality go along with that. Even if you use downloaded brushes, cut renders or manip a picture, it still expresses you in a way. Sometimes not what you are like mentally or emotionally, but your hobbies etc. Everyone is trying in their own way even if they are fairly new to sig making. Their sigs explain something about the person.

I make my own brush sets, and put them up for download for free on deviantart.
But I still hardly ever use them :\

I agree with the signature expresses who you are. Almost all of my signatures contain the Prince of Persia in them. This is because I love that game. The reason is because of its mythical/arabian type storyline. Some of my recent sigs have included these symbols such as the mecca or arabic writing.. :)

I think it depends on your point of veiw. When you start off making sigs, well most of us, we usually download brushes because thats what we think people do. Then as we get better, we start to realize you can make a much better sig if you do everything yourself.

Sig is just a graphic you choose to put under all of your posts. It's just something to show style, and look cool. I really don't think it has anymore of a purpose than that.
