This tutorial will show you 3 simple ways to animate text in your graphics (Note: This is for beginners, so please don't post saying "Oh, I already know how to do this")

    Typewriter Effect

    1. Open up the graphic you would like to have this effect. Make sure the text you want isn't on the graphic yet.
    2. Click the type tool, and type the first letter of the text you want. Type the next letter in a different text box, and repeat until you have all of the letters on different layers in the position you want. Here is what mine looks like so far:

    3. Switch to ImageReady (Ctrl+Shift+M). Make all text layers invisible on the first frame in the animation toolbar. Hit duplicate frame, and make the first letter visible. Duplicate that frame, and make the first and second letter visible. Repeat until it looks like this:
    4. Change the times under each frame as shown by clicking on 0.0 and then clicking on whatever you want to set it as. You don't have to use the same ones I used.
    5. Hit the play button to make sure your animation works. Go to File->Save Optimized As... and save it as a .gif.
    Here is my result:

Like I said before, this tutorial is pretty much for beginners to Photoshop/Image Ready. Hopefully this helped you understand the basics so you can figure out how to do more advanced animation on your own.
If you see any errors in this tutorial, please tell me so I can fix them. I want this tut to be as simple as possible.
    - rep or creds is always appreciated ^_^

    thanks for the replies :)
aly- when you click Save Optimized As..., how does it say jpg or html? It should say:
    HTML and Images (*.html)
    Images Only (*.gif)
    HTML Only (*.html)

if you could take a screenshot of your menu that would help
