Physicists in Singapore have developed a battery that can be powered by human urine. Aimed at disposable health-care kits for use in rural areas, we naturally couldn't pass up the opportunity to comment on such a product being used for those "emergency" phone calls when your conventional battery had died. Led by Dr Ki Bang Lee, a team at Singapore's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology developed a paper battery which is designed to be cheap to produce, and use urine as its power charge source. Time to recharge the battery ? Using 0.2 ml of urine, the team were able to generate a voltage of around 1.5 Volts with a corresponding maximum power of 1.5 mW. Battery performance can also be adjusted by using different construction materials. "Our urine-activated battery would be integrated into biochip systems for healthcare diagnostic applications," says Lee. He envisions a world where people will easily be able to monitor their health at home, seeking medical attention only when necessary. "These fully-integrated biochip systems have a huge market potential," adds Lee. The battery is made from a layer of paper that is soaked in copper chloride (CuCl) and then sandwiched between strips of magnesium and copper. The final product has dimensions of 6cm x 3cm, and a thickness of just 1 mm.

Yeah, you pee on your phone to get it to turn on, put it up to your face and whala... you get the cops.... you might need to throw up a bit but if it saves your life or something. Besides, if you read the whole post they are creating something else with it. Though, I am not sure what else they have in mind yet. Because they mention home healthcare quite a bit. Meaning they are coming up with something that has to do with checking your health with this. I am not sure how that will work out but if you post where you got this information I would like to read up on it.
how would this at all help the advancment of technology? or even us? the only real reason I can think of is that if you're lost and your cell phone battery ran out you could just piss in it..
Well duh, that helps technology, it would be the only battery that you could recharge and relieve yourself all at the same time!
dont doubt the scienctist capabilities with this type of technology. in the future we will see something big from this type of idea.
It's true. Anything to save recources now a days is a BIG!!!, Big deal. The way the world is going now, the way the "o-zone" layer is depleting. Everything is certainly heading toward trying to conserv as much as possible. One way we can do this is to use power off our bodily functions. That is fine. The first idea was bikes, big hit. More fit people came from that anyways. Now we ride around in cars and not trains or on bikes. This has resulted (along with other things) in the most obeice people we have ever seen. Now, this all is starting to wake people up and they are starting to work on things. Thus we come up with piss powered stuff. So what? The amonia in piss is used for many things so it's nothing new. Don't act like it may be.
