itunes works with any music player that supports mp3s.

What the ---- are some of you talking about? iTunes ... expensive? http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
The music would get expensive when you buy it from itunes, but who the hell does that?

Just download files? wth, it plays mp3, mp4, mov, cda (i think), and maybe more. its just like any other music player, except that it is a memory whore. just use wmp or winamp or something else. right now im playing a song on wmp and its 14000 k memory, while itunes is idling at 35000 k

I'm pretty sure it is, becuase theres even something big in france right now where they're trying to force apple to allow compatibility.

Whoever is saying you download mp3 format songs with iTunes doesnt know what they're talking about.

I prefer iTunes over any other music program - and I've used them all. WMP screws up in adding songs to playlists and neither WMP or Winamp offer any real organization.

When you buy songs from iTunes it saves as AAC format but you can get a program to convert them. When you rip songs it automatically saves them as AAC but you can change that in options to have it rip as MP3.

Dude, how is iTunes a s***ty program? At least it's better than any other media program. iTunes offers many great features and have many killer download purchases as well. Whenever I buy music tracks, I buy them at iTunes (99 cents each).
