I don't want to get in the middle of things, but I think that any topics that relate to religion, ethnicities, moral standings, etc. should be locked immediately, and deleted. I also think this should be added to the rules. It opens things up to flame fests, and a lot of peoples feelings can be hurt over it. I know a lot of people will tell others to just suck it up and deal with it, but if you really want a community to expand, you should really limit such controversial topics...

I am thinking of an alternative method to this.

Make a particular forum for controversial topics where it is passworded, then when the mods/admins see a responsible member they can give that member the password where they will maintain a civilized conversation amongst the members of the forum.

I personally enjoy talking about religion and other controversial topics, especially at large forums like this with over 50-70K members (judging from profile member number to the board stats member number). It helps me gain a better understanding on subjects when I see the viewpoint of so many other people in the discussion.

Yea but at some point there are going to be disputes not all people can control their temper, plus this can go really wrong if someone reports this activity. Discussions on religion can get pretty offensive and could end up in a lawsuit so yea bad idea :).

that possibility exists whether a particular forum is allowing it or not, controversial topics worthy of lawsuits come up everywhere, its hard to control them, you can atleast limit them by shutting them off or putting them in a responsible members only forum, which is hopefully was will be done here, as i enjoy the forum and the community and discussions of controversial matters.
