Basically I want to learn to do more styles of graphix, and 3D was one of them.
However, I really can't figure out how to open any of the free 3D programs, let alone use them.
I'm a total n00b in 3D graphics, so any help would be appreciated.

Basicly...to use any 3d making program, you have to pay for it =/
But you can ofc use alternative methods =)
Anyway, here is a list of some 3d programs:
    1.3dmax
    2.Maya
    3.Milkshape
    4.Cinema 4d

I mean how do they work.
I dl'd this one, and there was no way to run it, nothing.
Just a bunch of files my computer couldn't read.

Hmm...3dmax and maya can't be "officialy" dled,so you can only use Bittorent....but you can dl Milkshape and Cinema 4d (trial version tho).
They usually come with an .exe file, which starts the install of the program.
About your problem...maybe you downloaded the version for another OS ?

I found bryce to be a nice, quick, limited 3D design software. There are still pretty much unlimited possibilities, but it isnt as easy to work with as others if you get what I mean lol. I especially the ability to create the metallic objects inside of a metallic, hollowed ball with light sources all around, it was like pure silver being melted down.
