Yep, I wrote a seperate thread on getting a new system, but its getting a little high, so i want to update this computer I have now... current syustem settings: **will not upgrade** AMD Athlon XP 3000+ W/ Barton Core ASRock K7S41 40gb + 80gb HDD **will upgrade** 512mb ram FX 5500 Ultra 350watt PSU Want: RAM: 1gb ram - one stick of 1gb with DDR 400 to replace my 512mb DDR 333.. GFX: want something higher than my FX5500 AGP 8x card, with the same ports, VGA, AVI, and S-video out. PSU: anything better than my current Ultra one.. Add-ons: UPS: I want a cheap but good UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) to protwect my system from power loss and spikes. Power Strips: I want some good ones to replace my old flimsy ones that costed a few dollars. Print Server: I want to be able to print to one printer with my three computers in my room. I need a usb one. I've seen them around, but most of them had bad reviews... CPU fan/hs: I want to update my Socket A fan/hs that came with it. I want it to be quiet and cool, so a large fan, and a good heatpipe heatsink. Furniture: I would love to get rid of this small desk, and get a larger one where i can fit 2 monitors, speakers, mouse, keyboard, and my computer. (maybe from BestBuy, or Offic Max) good hunting, and thank you all in advance.
a bump and suggestions, just to give ya an idea: RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820231036 GFX: (Not sure, suggestion?) PSU: (Not Sure, suggestion?) UPS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16842107140 Power Strip: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16812120307 <-few of those? Print Server: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16833127034 <-this maybe? CPU Fan/HS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835106072 <-would thermalpaste help the heat, even if I'm not OCing?
FSP Group (Fortron Source) 450W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104954 nVIDIA XFX Geforce 7800GS 256/256 AGP 4x/8x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814150129 Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) Dual Channel PC3200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820141423 That heatsink is pretty decent since you have a socket A but youll want to get some as5 too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835100007 As for the others (Power strip, Print server, and UPS) i wouldnt know much about those <_< .
Thanks furious, although, i dont know if my computer can take dual channel... can you tone down on the gfx card just a tad? Merged Post: here's my board, doesnt say anything about dual channel ram.. http://www.asrock.com/product/K7S41.htm
Dual Channel is optional so you can still buy it. (Its good ram) And the graphics card, heres what i got nVIDIA ASUS Geforce 6600 256/128 AGP 4x/8x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121196 ATI SAPPHIRE Radeon X1600PRO 256/128 AGP 4x/8x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102665 (Im not a big fan of ATI though, no digital vibrance)
yeah, i stand by nVidea Geforce as well... I could play BF2 on low settings with a FX5500, and it says on the box 5700 or above that surprised me... but then it started to lag like every five minutes... now I should be fine with the 6600.. thanks alot man... I'll wait around for .DeFuZioN for other suggestions.
Ok here are gfx cards - If you want to take a shot at a cheap 6800 vanilia and try and unlock pipelines try this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814140067 Here is a great stock card 6800GS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814130264 If thats still too pricey I would say drop down to a x800GT which is the same price as a 6600GT and its better. As for heatsink I would say get a thermaltake, it doesnt really matter as most thermaltake hsfs are very quiet, but you need to get some AS5. As for ram, get whatever you want, even generic would be fine a latencies wont really matter and your not overclocking so you could same some money by getting generic.
about the printer server...now I dont really know much about them., but what I do in my house is I connect my printer to one of the main computers, and then simply right click> share it. Now all of the laptops and other computers can just print to that over the network (wirlessly). I just press print and go and pick it up. The only bad thing is that the computer which the printer is attached has to always be on if I want to print. Im using the HP deskjet 995c ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product...&lang=en&cc=uk# ), its USB and it works perfectly... Its also got bluetooth so if your computer is bluetooth enabled, you can print via that, so if that is what you want you might want to look into doing that over having a print server.
none of my compys has bluetooth, and i cant leave it always on or my mom gets mad about it... I need a print server because my dad is buying a new comp and is going to put it into ny room. and i already have three computers in my room.. i only print off this one..
FYI, athlon XPs only go to DDR333, DDR400 will be clocked down. EDIT: FYI there is no point of getting dual channel ram for this system, it doesn't even support 400mhz FSB, what would be the pointof going to DDR800 effective speeds if it won't matter? a singel strip allows for more total memory, which is good assuming he has no plans to migrate the ram to another system.
FYI- what are you talking about? source, man. website: http://www.asrock.com/product/K7S41.htm it can take DDR400. I agree on the dual channel though.. it did not say anything on the above link about dual channeling...
It doesnt matter because its cheaper to get ddr400 ram than 333 anyway. And you cant really not get dual channel sticks these days.
So currently I have: RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820141423 GFX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121196 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104954 UPS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16842107140 Power Strip: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16812120307 Print Server: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16833127034 CPU Fan/HS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835106072 AS5: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16835100007 Total: 386.52 And is all compatable? I'll look around for furniture..
