My freind ran a server off his comp for 1.6 for a bit, he had like a special line or something (maybe a router, i dunno) just for it.

Google may help, not sure. GL with it, however dedicated servers (cus ure saying dedicated im ausuming its Source) hosted off of computers usually suck. Just to let ya know, 30 bucks a month can get ya a pretty good server ;)

if he had a special line for a server then he probably had some kinda high bandwidth line, perhaps one of the T connections (T1, T2)

Yes, normally they keep their cimputer on that whole time.

EDIT: err I mean of course they restart their comp every once and a while when they need to but yea basically its on all that time i suppose.

I would just get the people to play if you know then in real life to just chip in and then you buy a server for it

that costs money... using your own computer as a server is more or less free and it offers you significantly more flexibility as to how your server is run. CS1.6 isn't even that demanding of a game either, when I fully upgrade my system, I will be running a CS 1.6(or source) server AND I will be playing at the same time.

That's basically it. All the other places like Clan servers have syatems dedicated for the game and nothing else along with a T internet connection.

It will be, as xelink says, because you are behind a router. Therefore, for others to be able to connect, you have to set up port forwarding.

May I ask what router you are using?

it all depends on what your internet is say if your on dsl your ip changes everytime your computer is turned off or restarted, say you wanted to run one with counterstrike 1.6

Run HLDS.exe next setup all the information with the game set to Counterstrike 1.6, remember your PORT number it will be needed later, once thats all gone you should have an admin control panel with a head admin console and stuff. If only you and your friends are able to play that means you are using the LAN ip, Lan ip makes it so that only people in your local lan area can play on it therefor giving the game an equal chance between ping to make it a public server go to this website

    www.whatismyip.com

Copy the ip and that is now your server ip
after that paste the ip in add server in your favorites

here is where you need your port number...
before you press ok your ip should be something like 207.160.58.5.0 the ip isn't complete yet you have to add :PORTNUMBERHERE to the end so your ip is something like 207.160.58.5.027015 or 27016 or whatever your port number is now you can press ok sometimes during map changes the server will mess up just wait for the server to change map or you can press escape and disconnect from the server then go back in if it says it isnt responding just keep hitting refresh until it appears again

    Some helpful admin commands
remember to do this in the ingame console
    rcon_password "passwordHere"
    ^ no " "
    after you do that
you can type in such commands as
rcon changelevel de_dust for example or cs_assault

hope this helps and i just typed this out quickly lol if you have any problems pm me

as others said, the server WILL lag if you don't have a fast connection. Cable probaly won't be fast enough because it has mediocre upload compared to it's download. Plan on only using it for like 2-5 people total.

and if you don't beleive me, try uploadingg a large document as an email and play CS at the same time... my ping jumped form 10-20 to 680
