    I just installed a new MAXTOR 6L200P0. I got it for 40 bucks (after 80 dollars in rebates.) So I took my computer apart and threw it together.

    I put it in the bay, and took the cable from my first HD and connected the extra section to my new one like this pic shows:
    [IMG]
    That is connected to Primary Master. Secondary Master is taken by my dvd-drive I believe.

    Then I got a random power cable and threw that on.

    The one thing I dont get much..

    How am I gonna set these? Fully explain this cuz I dont get this. How I do it, which I choose, etc...

    After turning on my PC, it is not detected at all, so Idk what to do..

    Did I connect the cables right? There's this group of four connections on it, 1 for psu, 2 for hd's and then 1 idk...but that one doesnt fit for the hd.

    I got an Asus A8N-E mobo.

    let me dig up my seagate manual.... It mentions how to set it to auto...

    ok, to set it to slave, remove the pin.
    to set it to "auto" put the pin in the 2nd one, which is cable select

    what you do is you take the pin using a small pair of plier or tweezers(gently) and pull it out and then reposition it. if you somehow loose the pin,I assume you could use solder.

    ok thanks dude..

    but for the pins, I just totally pull them out so they are no longer there at all?

    nd I just found a diagram..
    for a note to myself here...pg.10
    ATA Interface Cable:
    Mobo/PCI- Blue
    Master- Black
    Slave- Gray

    OK, I will try to make the diagram for you...

    this is what it looks like sorta
    ::::
    ::::

    then:

    single/primary drive
    []:::
    []:::

    Cable Select(makes IDE cord position determine drive as either slave or master)
    :[]::
    :[]::
    and having no pins in it makes it slave
    ::::
    ::::

    so what you do is you take out the sumper, then you put it on the IDE cable so it's slave. If you don't do that, then you put the jumper so that it is cable select, which makes it easy. if you want it to be primarythe pin the pin in the first position. this doesn't matter a ton as far as know and in BIOS you can adjust it to boot the slave before the master so it again does not matter much.

    if I were you, I'd just put it in cable select.

    if the drive does not work at all on cable select, you probably got a bad drive.

    one thing you might want to try is setting both of the drives to the same IDE port, maybe the cble is bad. again if everything is on cable select it should be autodetected. also, check BIOS. Is it detected in BIOS? if not then you are F'ed.

    Well, I got all my HDDs on MASTER, it's set in the bios somewhere, if I turn them on slave, they don't work. I suggest you just to try it out. That's the way I did.

    You pull the connector out, not the pins themselves to put it as a slave.

    look on the settings either on the front label, or on the back, right below the connections...

    Ok, I got it to work.

    Now two questions.
    A: Can I change the name of it? It's DRV2_VOL1, I want to change it to something else (any suggestions for a second name are taken xD)

    B: I want the new one to be drive C, the old drive D, and the dvd drive as E.
    Right now its.
    Old HD: C
    New HD: E
    Dvd Drive: D

    any way how without messing up my data?

    Its not set as a bootable drive, must I change that at all?
