ok...right now my desktop will not start up properly. i keep recieving the message that Microsoft did not load successfully...do u want to boot in Safe Mode...or Normal Mode. No matter what option i choose my computer restarts and brings me back to this screen only to repeat the process. this all happened after i did the hard drive error-checking. i have no idea what i should do other than reformating my computer. my friend told me to just install windows over the current partition to get my files backs, but i'm wondering what else can i do? thanks in advance...Kira
have you tried "loading in last known good configuration"? On that black screen you see when your start, choose that option. Try that, if that doesnt work, put the XP cd in and restart, and REPAIR WINDOWS, this wont delete anything, itll just repair some of the neccessary files on your computer.
Well if u just reinstall windows more then likely some or most programs will need to be reinstalled. did u try doing a system restore to the day before it happen (not sure if that may work)
thats what i would do, flame. but if you cannot do either of those, get Knoppix, it is a bootable Linux OS. It runs straight off of the cd. with this, you can look inside your drive, pick the files you want to keep, and burn it to a cd-r. then reinstall windows.
Try to remove the last driver/program you installed in safe mode. Try again then. Service Packs are known buggers for this problem.
well my computer is a gateway (unfortunatley) and its under warranty, so tried to get help from the online tech support. they told me to do the r-option as well...so i tried later in the day and didn't even get the option. i tried to get help agian and they made me go through the process twice. the tech came to the conclusion that i should get the r-option with the disc and since i'm not, that windows has been corrupted on my computer. hence unrepairable. my only option is to reformat my computer and in the process lose my files. however, XMasterX said to do this to get my files. "get Knoppix, it is a bootable Linux OS. It runs straight off of the cd. with this, you can look inside your drive, pick the files you want to keep, and burn it to a cd-r. then reinstall windows." just want to know if that is possible or not? links please as well.
This happened to my older computer, and if you really want to keep your files, make another partition install windows and when everything is good, transfer all the files from one to another and finally delete the old partition. It may take a while, but if you have important stuff, you can try this.
so just install windows on the same hard drive over the current partition? can you explain more about the installing part.
google, my friend... http://www.knoppix.org/ its better than xecution's suggestion. when you make a partition or copy over the current os, things can happen. this way you can save your impiortant data.
thanks for the link and i'm probably going to use that method. however, want things can happen when you make a partition or copy over the current os. also, the linux method runs off a cd with no installation...if u could clarify that would be great.
