Thanks for trying to help, but Elite toolbar is a totally different virus. I had that once, but it was deleted a long time ago. Do you think this will work? http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2109p156id111652.htm
No, reinstalling xp won't lose your files, and yes there is a way to make a partition if you mean that.
@Enigma I have two computers, but the one I am on is a Celeron 333 Mhz with a 9 GB hard drive. It isn't too good at all. @XMasterX I want to try everything before I do that. Do you think the link I posted above is any good?
de ja vu? a repair install will not delete your settings or files, just will overwrite the affected system files. 9GBs of ram? think you mistyped that...
Should I try reinstalling windows by following the tutorial I posted a link of in the above posts? @devestation Are there any guides on how to make a partition like that? Will it ensure I don't lose any files or is it too risky?
Im thinking of this way It doesnt have to be Mega big - a 40Gb HD would be plenty for your music - It wont cost much Unless you got a partition with 30GB then it would be alright but if u havent then only resort would be try and get a proggy which gets rid of the virus hm.. Rather than doing a compromise of losing the music - The best way would be to nag your parents as Master said Ive got my tut for ya if ya want http://www.gamerenders.com/forum/index.php...63529&hl=format At step 11 you create the partitions - If its confusing then that link u posted is not bad either ^_^
Well, i'm not sure, but I formatted just a few day's ago, get the win xp cd, start your pc, put the cd in the drive. Then boot from the cd, and install windows, It will ask on what drive you want to install, I have 2x160GB's and I also could make a partition , they just asked how much size etc. I'm not sure but I think you can try that. Whats the size of your HDD(s)?
You can make partitions through Admin tools as well - If you hav unpartitioned space then thats suitable too Reinstalling Windows wont delete the virus - It will just basically 'refresh' the settings and system files - Its not effective The effective one is format but also very annoying -lol if u havent backed up  just so u notice : i got a 160GB SATA - w/ 1. 100GB parttition 1 & 2. 60GB Partition 2nd HD - 200GB - split into 2
Thanks for all the help guys. Once I am done with all of this, I am going to go through the topic and distribute some positive reputation. 200 credits to whoever helped the most. My options right now: 1. Repair Installation of Windows Is there a noob guide to do this? Also, will this ensure no data loss? 2. http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2109p156id111652.htm 3. New Hard Drive 4. Reformatting with data loss. Will any of these let me actually log on normally without any error screens?
you reformatted, not repaired windows. when the blue screen comes up, press enter to install, press f8 at the agreement stuff, then when it shows your partition where xp is, press r to repair it. when you reformat, everything goes bye bye. you will loose no data while doing a repair. it only overwrites the system files. i have done this several times over.
say what you want, but repair will overwrite all the system files. it will overwrite the virus... Merged Post: if repairing does not help, go to step 4, the hdds are relatively cheap these days for 40gb....
Windows Repair feature not very effective - You want to remove a malicious code not reinstall windows system files I dont think it affected your system files because your still running it i presume Master
