your monitor is most likely fine, don't worry about it.

how fast is your hardrive, what are your seek times, how muc buffer does it have?

    what processor do you have

run CPUz and give us the output

you don't know what his CPU/motherboard setup is, if his CPU is outdated he might want to upgrade that and the motherboard and then your card suggestion wouldn't be appropriate.

stpl's list was pretty goo, but before jumping out and buying anything, tell us hat you have.

again, you might be able to hold off on the proc and motherboard, or you might need a new one. it just depends.

also there is a chance he won't need a new PSU or case. again we need to know more, but I will say this, the 7800GT is a great card, as si the x1800XL

bah, if you really wanna go for the greatest computer, either make it really on yourself (not with the paying part though) get the Alienware ALX Series (that is what i look at, as I am a hardcore gamer, and a photoshop user.) But yeah, the +4200 Althon, great processor (my brother just got one, i got the Pentium D 820 instead, quite a bit cheaper). As for the video card, I was also looking at the GeForce 7800GT(and GS), I'm still stuck with the ATI Radeon 9500, good card, just outdated (still managed 70 fps on counter strike though ;))

john, how much money do u have to spend of a card? if ur rich then get the 7800 gtx or the radeon X1900, if u have around 300.. get the 7800 gt, if u have around 200 get the 6800 GS, if u have around 150 then get the X800. i mean theirs so many to choose from but nowadays almost all cards over 150 will play top notch games, i remember when the X800 first came out it was 400X now u can find it anywhere for lower than 200

    Merged Post:

edit: john dont even think about even looking at alienwaresm their good but for 3K+ u can build ur own that is better, u can get dual sli 7800 GTX which is around 1000 for just that but if ur thinking about alienware then u can afford it.
