for me, its just the look of it. being that i type with one hand, (yeah, long story short, my right arm is disabled), it doesn't matter. I can use any keyboard but the splitted one...

In mice, I look again for look, but if it is wireless, that it has a docking station where i can charge it after use...

also, in keyboards, extra media buttons are nice, but do you really need em....

As long as mouse is optical, and the keyboard has all buttons intact, im happy. Theres no need for those $100 wireless crap that you have to charge, etc etc

Look for this and you should be well covered.

Mouse: Smoothness of the page scroll roller, the feel of it in your hand, size, how it clicks, the sound of the click and loudness, optical ALL THE WAY, wireless, docking station, battery life, signal strength, matching colors to my computer (silver and black in my case).

Keyboard: Layout (Like it straight not curved), sound knob (Never buttons), mute button, eject 1 and 2 buttons, sleep button, playback and media buttons, turn off button, wireless, battery life, signal strength, pods underneath to raise the top up (adjustable ones, not the ones that are one size), matching colors to my computer (happens to be black and silver in my case).
