Heyy Dudes, I am looking for some advice, I need a new : - CPU - Socket 939 - Mainboard - Socket 939/PCI-X/SLI (not needed) and it must also be able to set some good overclock settings. Pref, a passive cooled South brigde (not really needed) Price around $300-450 This PC is gonna work as a server/Media center I now have - 6600 PCI-E - 2 NIC's - SATA 250 GB - 2GB DDR RAM - DVD-ROM
if you OC, then go for the opertron 165, it OCs really well if you don't OC try the Athlon X2 4200+ it performs at more or less the sam level as the 4400+, but is cheaper. If you want to save some cash, go for the x2 3800+.
the 165 opteron is 939 pin. PCI-X isnt out yet. only pci-e is. The 4200+ doesnt perform like a 4400+, in cpu intensive tasks a 1mb cache is equivalent to a 200mhz performance increase over the similar 512kb cache. As you are going to overclock I suggest the DFI LanPary Ultra-D Which can be modded with a lead pencil to support SLI. If you want something a little cheaper look into an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?mod...l2=236&chart=74 take a look at the benchmarks on that.typically at the worst, the 4200+ is about 3-4% less powerfull based on the bench mark numbers... but wait... about 1/3 times the 4200+ comes out on top AND when it doesn't it's typically by less than 1 % a vast majority of the time. also, goldman, you didn't evn mention a case and why not go dual core? dual core is clearly the future compare the price of the 3200+ with the X2 3800+ you get double the CPU, but it doesn't even cost double if you get a fairly goo deal. Dont get that thermaltake psu. Thermaltake psu's are not great. He cant get the puma as he automatically voids warranty. He needs to get the 480 or 500 Watt Antec Smart Power II as dfi requires at least 480W's.
then swap down for a cheaper motherboard, he's using it as a server so he doesn't really need the extra clock speed, and the extra cores make a huge impact due to the highly threaded nature of running a server.
