i never had a pre built sadly i always had my own(the best computer is a computer made by you...why?...because you can fully customise it from top to bottom for what you plan on doing with it...and putting together a computer is not very hard......)
well i have an upgraded version of that gateway (pretty much exactly same but diff. specs) and i got it from future shop and its great.... havent had any problems.
I have had comps from both companies, and both have kinda died on me. the gateway had a truely huge case, I kinda knocked it over(twice) and lost a little info on the HDD, it lasted a total of 8 years I had a refurbished HP and its harddrive(a WD) crapped out on me after about 6 months just spontaneaously. I ended up having to reinstall windows and the HDD was enver the same. I used it for backup sotrage, but it then truely failed me, now I am just going to throw it away or donate it for tax benifits. Also, the proc on the thing overheats accordign to BIOS. it isn't typical for an athlon XP 3000+ to run at 70C conversely, my friend bought an HP without problem thusfar and my stepmothers albiet crappy HP is still running.
hp >>>>>> gateway gateway has too many problems (personal experiance... i bought A LOT of comps over the years and everyone has trouble with gateway)
both suck but if you must then go with HP. I sell computers at CompUSA. HP's manufacturers warrantee is better then Gateway. But if you have the money i recomend getting a compusa TAP plan. Dont go platinum unless you really need the in home installation and delivery of your computer. Gold gives you everything you need plus some nice stuff like on site repair. HP plans (or any manufacturers for that matter) suck because 1. it takes them 4-6 weeks at least to get your computer up and running and 2. most times they wont cover things because they can find a way to claim customer abuse etc.
