i think it was the stupidest idea to announce the finding. did they give out the location?

that just means people will go in and collect the new insects for collections etc and they will be gone.

Yea I'm sure people will be able to just go in and collect anything they want.

In case you were wondering, I am being completely sarcastic. Its an easily controlled region, and every species is likely rare enough to qualify as protected as an endangered species.

It is unlikely any more mainline news will pick up any additional information, because people are interested in the original discovery, but the only likely result is that a few new species will be added to the tree of life.
And they won't be evolutionay links allowing us to piece together the history of some species, they are likely a more or less recent allopatric divergence from another population.

Its been a big hit here in the UK newspapers & tv, i read it first myself on msn.com....

For the interested ones: the echidna is not a new species, however the long-snout echidna (ie: the one discovered) is!

And for the worried ones: Interestingly enough the people who own the land in and around this "kingdom" didn't know of its exsistance and are working very closly with governments to keep the area off limits to tourism.

I found it exciting even though i hate Nature, but it just shows how much of our planet we know not of.

Heard about this on Npr on my way home from work. One of the bird species is a close relative to the t-rex which is pretty fascinating.

there are loads more species of animals in rainforests undiscoverd the only reason we keep finding new one is because of the damage we do to the rainforests, also there are loads of plants undiscoverd which alot of can be used in medicine, yet we dont get because they die for reasons that you know :/
