More info: http://ckturbo128.proboards4.com/index.cgi...read=1138544120 I was about to buy a new PC when I read this, my motherboard doesn't support SATA and PCI-E. What about you all? All got the newest pc's?
My work pc's have agp. Saying it's dead is kindda silly. Boards still come out with regular pci slots.
People that have an agp mobo now and can't immediatly afford a new computer with pci and killer gfx card will probably continue to use it for a while. But in terms of compatability, production etc.. I think you can pretty much say agp is awaiting its doom.
I also heard that even F.E.A.R. at Maximum settings doesn't use up all of the bandwidth in an AGP 8x slot. I, myself, stuck with AGP because to get a new mobo, I'd also have to buy a new processor. My card is very comparable, maybe even better than the 7800 GS. I have an ASUS x850 XT Platinum Edition overclocked to 565 and 1228 with stock cooling. If my card can run CoD 2 on max settings with 4x AA and 16x AF with DX9 shaders ... I'm most definately sure that AGP is not dead by a longshot. You can still buy PCI graphics cards, such as the Geforce 5 series. LONG LIVE AGP!
Slightly worse than the 7800GS. Not by much, though. Nothing maximizes the bandwith of an AGP8x slot yet. It's not dead, just... mortally wounded.
when the day comes when you can get PCI-E Cards for as cheap as the AGP's, plus the boards, then AGP might die out.
In a couple tests, yes. But not only does the 7800GS support SM3 and all the newer technologies, but it's supposed to OC like a beast.
PCI-E cards are alot cheaper than AGP cards. My graphics card was $330.00 and you can buy a 7800 GT (a little bit better than my card) for about $280 ... some even have an extra $10 rebate. The only problem is, is that most people with an AGP slot also have to buy a new processor with their motherboard, unless they have a P4 775 or any of the AMD 64's and up. I wish I had an AMD to begin with cause then I would have bought the 7800 GT + EVGA SLI Mobo (free with graphics card) for about $350. ^_^
it costs 60-70$ more than the PCI-e 7800GT, why not just get a new motherboard for that and have future scaleability?
Like I said, many people also need a new processor as well (like me) cause my Pentium 4 is socket 478 ;( ... and it works great for games anyways ... I'll build my own comp in two years ... by then, this computer wont be very good for games ^_^
Well, if 8x agp still isn't maxed out, people with pci can continue with the same motherboard for a loooong time. I now have a max of agp 4x (And I'm using a 8x 9800pro on it lol) So if I want good performance my only option is a new pc. But if I'm not mistaking they're coming with PCI 2 or something soon ?
