Well, unless you were actually SHARING the file, you are 100% okay. It specifically says on the CD's you purchase, that you may not re-destribute the music and stuff like that. If you were just downloading music, than you are 100% okay, because it isn't illegal to acquire the music for free, just re-distribute it.
Damn... Never thought they would actually crack down. I better stop downloading illegally from now on.
I have never uploaded any music file in my entire life. I don't even know how to except upload on internet sites. I hope they can't do anything. Plus, I can't counter sue because they didn't scan my harddrive. They just found my IP while looking through LimeWire.
but i think it counts as uploading if it is in your shared folder, because obviously you are sharing it which is redistributing, and I'm pretty sure most P2P programs have it set as default to download into the shared folder and share.... I may be wrong though....
yeah i turn off sharing and stuff, and i move all of my music to a seperate folder... edit: btw what program where you using?
Shneaky I believe is right. As far as my knowledge goes, technically, from a law standpoint they can't do anything if your downloading files. What you download is your own private business to my knowledge. It is the redistribution of files that have been copyrighted that breaks the law. I would do some research if I where you into the techniqalities of copyright laws and how it works if you where just recieving, and not sharing. Maybe even have a consultation with a lawyer about it and bring it up and see what they have to say. If you can get a lawyer to back you up on it, I doubt the RIAA could legally do much as long as nothing was in your shared folder. Here is a link to copyright laws for the united states http://www.copyright.gov/title17/ if you read over all of that, and yes it is alot of reading, you might be able to come up with something that can maybe pull your butt out of the fire. Good luck though. The RIAA I am sure just wants money from people, and if you arent willing to settle out of court and just pay them because of their "intimidation factor" they may or may not pursue it further especially if they cant provide any substanial proof that you where doing anything against the law.
Thousand's of unsolved crimes and murderers running rampant. And they care about copying music...that's quite sick actually.
True, there are many other problems the courts should be dealing with instead of this nonsense. Chronic I feel for you and the situation you are in, I wish I could help, all I can do is wish you luck in the case.
Well it is alot easier to get the IP of a person whos illegally shared music then it is to solve a whole case, but yes, it still is disgusting. So so far what im hearing is that you are fine unless you actually share music because that is what is againat the law, not actually downloading music.
