Okay, well the RIAA has decided to sue me and I need help. My Mom needs to contact a lawyer or whatever but is there anyway we can negotiate with the RIAA and come to a settlement with a best outcome? We used to download music but stopped right around the time this was recorded. Now we obtain all our music legally so is there anway to agree on a settlement with these people? I have read a few articles on my ISPs website but would still like more information. If they do decide to sue, how much can the cost go up to?
By law, the maximum penalty per copyright infringement is $150,000; the minimum is $750 per infringement. Depending on how many songs you've downloaded, it could get pretty steep. Settlement out of court wont be a problem for you. It may be pricey, but it's better than paying a fine in additiion to three years in prison.
Oh crap, my sisters have downloaded thousands of songs while I only had 40. But it has been a few months. Maybe they only caught on to one song..
From what I hear, the government uses 'trap' files to catch people...being that ISPs are no longer liable to just hand out the activity of their customers. These trap files are mainly used through p2p networks; however, the use of torrents cannot be controlled yet. All from what I hear...

At this point, you're just going to have to settle with them out of court - That's how they handly all of the cases. They're not out to sue you, just extort money out of you with a settlement. The only way it will go to court is if you refuse to settle with them, unless they decide to change their practices. Obviously, the safest way to avoid this is to not download copyrighted material in the first place. However, barring that, download PeerGuardian, and keep it up to date. Beyond that... Try to stay off of the major public networks, like Kazaa, Limewire, etc. I'm not going to link or name any of them, but private bit torrent trackers located out of the US are probably as close to 'safe downloading' as possible. If they're private, it is much harder for the RIAA to get the IP adresses used themselves, and if they're out of the US in a country where copyright laws are different, they can't have the site shutdown and strip the records themselves. But, as I mentioned above, the only completely safe way is to not download copyrighted music at all.
Thank God There are almost no copyright laws for the internet here, Is it leagal that they scan your hard drive without any kind of legal notice?
