I am looking to buy a heatsink for my CPU, that is better than my heatsink now, but I don't know what socket type I have. I'm guessing it's and Intel 478 Slot, because it is a Pentium 4 HT from about 2 years ago. Is there any other possible slot it could be from then?

I believe either CPU-Z or PC Wizard tells your socket type.

    For CPU-Z ... it says "Package: mPGA-478" ... so I'm guessing that means it's socket 478 ... right?

Cash is in very short supply for me, since I don't have a job, they don't make many heatsinks for socket 478 and this heatsink was given good reviews ----> Thermaltake TTR2TT ... here is the list of the rest of the 478 heatsinks ----> www.newegg.com. I like ASUS brand, I am very happy with their products, but thier heatsink wasn't given very good reviews. Please tell me what you guys think?

Best Air Cooling solution for a CPU is the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, $50 at NewEgg, but the TTR2TT is pretty good, too.

So your thinkin that the $9.99 will be aliright, my heatsink right now sucks ... it gets really loud in the summer and it doesn't cool very well at all. All it is, is a regular metal heatsink, with a green tube that hooks to a fan at the back of my computer and blows it out. If I buy this new heatsink, I will have a separate fan for my CPU and the existing 80 mm fan can be used just to blow air out of the computer :D For only 10 bucks ... I am surprised how good the reviews were, my PSU is also a thermal take ... and it was also cheap with good reviews and I love it  ... hope this is the same.

Ya, right now ... my CPU cooling setup is very loud and doesn't cool well because it overheats alot in the summer. I was also thinking of overclocking a bit (as soon as I learn how to overclock CPUs) :D

ok sorry i didnt catch that bit.

Get that at minimum its 17dBa so thats pretty quiet. However if your pc gets hot during summer chances are it will still get hot and it will still be noisy. In CPU-Z can you tell us if you have a prescott.

That one is $27.99 ... the other one is only $9.99 ... what do you think of the $9.99 one ... because i only have like up to 50 bucks to spend on a heatsink and a 512 MB stick of RAM ... and the one for $9.99 had such great reviews. Will it be all I need?

    Merged Post:

Oh, and CPU-Z says that I have a Northwood, not a Prescott.

Well buy the cheap one I dont expect you will see any improvement with noise and heat with the one you picked.

Well, mine isn't that loud, it just gets loud when things get hot. During the winter, I have no prob with it being loud and heating up ... its just the summer that gets me. Plus, that fan that is at the back of my case, sucking air from the CPU, it will just suck air out of the whole computer after I unhook the green tube it is attached to. Therefore cooling the whole computer better, that was my plan ... just to get an extra fan in there. Anthing is better than what I have now for CPU cooling  The thing that I am most drawn in by, is that it is only 10 bucks ... everything else is much more, unless it has bad reviews.
