Ok, I just recently downloaded the ATI Tool program for my computer off of the Maximum PC Disk. Just a few questions about it (was running it and catalyst at the same time to measure temp). How long should it go before finding pixel artifacts (it was finding 1 px artifacts ... is that going to matter ... cause i couldn't even see them)? What should be the recommended and maximum temp for the idle and load times be? I don't want to ruin my new graphics card ... ASUS x850 XT Platinum Edition ... so I would like to overclock carefully. I oc'ed my old 5200 FX as much as I wanted ... because I knew I was getting a new one and that I wanted to squeeze all the life out of it I could. But this one has to last for 1 - 2 years for my gaming needs, until I can build my own comp. I had it OC'ed to 560 and 1228 before and it was about 35 - 40 degrees Celsius idle and 55 - 70 while playing Call of Duty 2 (depends how long I play ... about 70 degrees celsius after 2 hours). It also was finding about 1 px (pixel) artifacts about every minute in the ATI tool ... is that ok? Thanks
Graphics cards can handle much more heat then CPUs, 70 C under load is perfectly fine. And artifacts only matter if they disrupt your gaming. I don't think they do any harm to your video card, but I'm not certain.
I think that the artifacts are signs of the card deteriorating so if you continue your GPU will eventually fry itself.
Well, it was finding artifacts that were only 1 pixel in size. I couldn't notice it because my monitor is 1280 x 1024 pixels. My old graphics card ... if I OC'ed it too high ... there would be artifacts the size of 1/4 of the screen ... but its only detecting 1 pixel ones ... so I should be ok.
the articfact its picking up could just be a glitch. I would monitor the artifacts that you are getting and if it begins to increase dramatcally then take off the oc. Also yeah standard cards at this time your 6600gts to x850's etc can withstand upto about 85 C then i would be worried any higher. But older cards like the 9800pro can keep running well upto 105 C.
Ya, I noticed that it shuts down about at 86 C ... when it was running a heat up test for a couple hours. For some reason ... the heat test is more intense than CoD 2 or F.E.A.R. on max ... dunno how that could be possible
