    Your opinion on this technique?

Should people use it for full effects? Would it make them better? Or worse?

If the winner of ROTY used extraction on the render to win, would you find that fair?

I could go on and on... But I want to hear your opinions first.

I wish I could have an opinion, but to be honest, I have no idea what extraction is.

My rendering technique is, I use my pen tool, go around the image once, and then Bob's my Uncle.

I knew there was some other mysterious method people used to get their renders so primo looking, but was never sure how *raises eyebrow*

In my opinion extraction is a technique which is lame, because it requires zero skill, but to alot of people it looks like it requires skill. Using extraction in ROTY-final, is in my opinion allowed, but very dumb. Because in that stage I hope people are informed enough to know that extraction requires no skill and therefor the difficulty will drop to 0. And to win the ROTY you need to score maximum points on all area's.

I can tell you that the one who uses extraction in the finals isn't getting my vote :)

It is possible to render 'special effects' with out extraction. It takes time, effort, and skill. Extraction tool doesnt. I dont care if you use extraction on part of your render and post it in premium but i dont think when people use it they should be considered awesome renderers. I'm not saying your a bad renderer (i wouldnt be wearing your fan thing if i thought u sucked ;) )but in a competition i wouldnt vote for someone who was usin extraction.

Argueably, though, if the render looks good, does it matter whut technique is used? (Another arguement is that Rendering is a hobby, you spend your time and effort on a piece and then have a end result which shows your effort and time spent **RIP**)

Erhm.. IMO extracion makes renders cool to looks at, but when youre gonna use them, they suck, all of those 'render effects' kill teh render

Like in your dragon render, the R I P was amazing, but i think you made a reborn wich i personally voted in but when was gonna use it it sucked :) Ya know what i mean? When you look at them in the forums they look good, but the usability is low.. So its better to post an clean cut, usable render IMO

Well although using the pen and lasso tools require more skill, extraction makes rendering easier and quicker, imo people will use what they are most used to i can't say ive noticed many people using extraction the majority of renderers still use the pen tool...

as long as the render looks good and u did it YOURSELF then i don't see a problem using it for special effects

In my opinion there should be:

either: A sticky post in the premium render section about Extraction/Channels and whatever that explains them so people are informed.

or: It should be mentioned above the render that Extraction was used (at the ROTY that is).

When I judge a render I dont looks at the effects I simply look at the render it self and it's edges, However sometimes the extraction tool is necessary with images that have alot of effects in them to make it looke nice but wont affect the quality of the render.

i think that the people who are saying that renderers who are using extraction are bad renders, are stupid people..
When you only use the pentool and lasso tool, will that make you a good renderer? I think not: because using those tools is easy as hell , but it only takes alot of time (and on most parts of a picture you are kinda forced to use them anyway). So both techniques dont require any skill in my opinion..
the only thing that requires little skills is to find a good picture, but that is also a little luck based. and then finally you should see what pictures will be liked and what pictures will not be liked..

So: Extraction / Pen Tool / Lasso tool : ALL easy, so dont talk stupid..
based on my opinion i think there is no problem at all with extraction.. it is only the outcome that matters, and not the ways u used to get to it, because in my opinion they all have the same difficulty level, but one way only takes more time then the other, and hey, if you want to look cool by saying: "Hey, i spend about 9 hours cutting this with the pen tool" , then that's your own decision.. but dont go tell other people that they are bad renderers, because they dont like to spend alot of time on rendering, while it can be done in less time.

Ever tried to render a special effect with primairy tools? That requires skills and time.

They way you are putting it, it looks like rendering requires no skill at all. But if you look around, how many good renders are supplied in comparison to how many bad renders? I think rendering does require skill because not everybody gets them out smooth... (No offence to anyone, even if you are a bad renderer, just practice and you will learn  :P )

I dunno, never used the Extraction thingie.. where's it at?

The tools I use for when I do renders is some channel swapping, some Calculations, and then go in with a brush and clean it up nice and neat. Usually turns out decent.
