no they feared that communism would replace democracy. they considered the USSR to be an aid to that philosophy. pleasenote how the US attacked/ manipulated communist government in the 20th century.

but when it comes down to it, it was really all about power. vietnam and korean wars (believe you are refering to these two wars) should never have been fought. the united states lossed in vietnam and were left in a stalemate in korea (the 38th parallel). who did north vietnam allign itself during the beginning of the war? the soviet union. who approved and then propelled kim II sung in north korea? the soviet union, vise versa for the united states.

basically the soviet union and the united states did manipulate these countries as pawns during the cold war era. but it's my opinion that it really was not communism vs. democracy, but instead a fight for power between two countires on the brink of war.

the people of the united states feared communism, mccarthyism, in which mr. mccarthy and others accused various people of aiding the soviet union and being communist sympathisers (red scare), but if the united states really thought communism was the greatest issue and threat and would replace democracy, wouldn't china have been up on the list, since it is the largest country in the world, let alone communist.

but it's just my opinion (not trying to say anyone is right or wrong).
