I still prefer Linux... but its kinda difficult to install unless you've done it before..
if you want to give it a try, there are a lot of Linux distributions on www.linuxiso.org
Suse, Mandrake and Debian are the ones I've been recomended...
If its your first time, use Suse or Mandrake :)
But you'll probably prefer to stay with windows, so back to that.
I would get XP Pro like .tekno said, unless the price difference is really big... dont think so ;)

well you can get proOEM for as little as 99$

why don't you "obtain" the ISO for windows Home or whatever version you have and use your current CD key? I mean that should be legal under the US fair use law.

if he can't find it for the same price as home, there is no real reason for it unless he does mass networking. I'm currently running pro and I can tell you it's not THAT great. I would have taken home, but a guy I knew gave it to me for 20$(he bought it with the intention of using it on a media PC and media center came out after he bought it so he didn't really need it) again, trust me, there is no real advantage to having pro, maybe pro 64 if you know what you're doing but not normal pro.

    here is pro 64 for 140 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...70&Sku=M17-7505

too lazy to search for cheaper.

If you ask me you can do this:
    XP pro. cracked (means p2p)
XP pro. bought. (wouldn't waste money on this ----)

    Linux is free and cool.
Try it before trying anything else.
Debian is the best Linux cause of the Synaptic I gues.

    Good luck.

Pro is better, but the fact is, once you upgrade to SP2, It just treats it as 'XP', not 'XP Pro' or 'XP Home'...

Yes, linux is free, but hard to install mostly. if you don't know what you are doing, you can really mess it up...

the fact that he plays many games, linux may not be the best move...

That is one disadvantage for the Linux most proggys use windows nowadays so compatibility issues

Just get either Pro or Home just depends on your budget as said once installed SP2 its "Windows XP" not "WinXP PRo or Home" u seen the bootup screen, No?

Once booted in normal without Sp2 it has either Home or Pro but if u got SP2 on it it just says "WinXP" :D

Just got for whichever you want - ALl you need is the CD to bootup through and your CD Key
