As far as servers are concerned youll need the following:
Most are linux, which is free, so a Linux OS
    About 2 gigs of RAM
Around 80-160 gigs a piece (this helps to not overwork the memory when its being accessed all the time, the small size i mean)
Around a 2.5-3.0GHz processor, normally intel, as they are cheaper
Great cooling system (to continue to have the ability to keep it up at all times except routine maintenance).

That takes care of the easy hardware part, basically just throw in a graphics card and such and your ready.

Software would be the following (base):
Linux (numerous websites host numerous Linux types, I personally like the Fedora series)
Apache 2.x (available at the Apache Website)
A form of a webhost manager (for reseller accounts)
A form of a cPanel (i personally like cPanel best)
    SMTP server (for mail)
FTP server (like FileZilla, for FTP access)
    MySQL
    PhPMyAdmin
    PhP
    CGI
    Perl

thats just the basics, I am sure there are more, I just cant think of them right now.

For prices I would recommnd looking at professional hosting websites. My personal favorite professional website is surpasshosting.com they have always been reliable and are the cheapest for the service you get. Ofc there are places like prolinkhosting.com that offer 'unlimited' space/bandwith but its bologna.

Thanks man very much. I was thinking about getting around 800 to 900 gigs of memory with another 800 to 900 gigs for back up. Should I just get a bunch of 400 gigabyte hard drives or what? Oh I forgot what about for the internet?
