    I have a MSI KM3M-V (Socket A)

Previously it fried, so i sent it in for a replacement, but I needed another computer, fast. My other one died and I needed another ASAP. So about a month later, I have an extra board.

    What I HAVE:

    Case
    Memory (256mb)
    HDD (40gb)
GFX Card (some old AGP Geforce 32mb card)

    What I NEED:

CPU (preferably an AMD Athlon XP 3000+)
CPU Fan (one that cools good and is quiet)
DVD burner (just to watch DVDs on and burn DVD/CD's, no need for DL)

anything else I forgot, add in.

I am giving this computer to my dad. He just goes online and plays small games, nothing big, so he doesn't need 512 memory or a high end GFX card.

try to lock in the lowest price, I don't want to spend too much... and try to get it all from one place to save shipping costs.

Get the Athlon XP 3000+ and just use the stock fan. It should be perfectly fine. For the DVD burner get an NEC 3550a, as it's one of the best around. I believe both the 3000+ and the 3550a can be found at Newegg.

    Watercooling for $50?

    ...

A decent WC kit will put you well past $200. Don't get some crap pre-built stuff by Corsair or something.

Also, he has a Socket A motherboard. So, he can't put an Athlon 64 in it anyway.

    Master, here are links:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819104210 - Athlon XP is discontinued, and the Sempron is better anyway. The stock cooler here is excellent, but I'll link to another one as well.

You can go for the OEM version of the sempron 2600 for the same price...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819104205

Doesnt come with the cpu fan or heatsink tho.. but I believe thats the type of fan you are gettin anyway..

I dont think anything else is different with OEM....
Its not a huge difference anyway, you might be better off with the 2400

and Bona Fide is right bout the DVD burner, its really good..I got it..extremely fast and such.

I agree Diablo... I would rather get that 200 dollar water cooling case if I wanted water cooling.

Is the Athlon XP 3000 as fast as the Semperon 2600?

TD has the Athlon XP 3000, as well as the DVD and heatsink/fan.

A little more pricy, but I normally get orders from them the next day since I am so close to Chicago, one of their main warehouses. Even if i do choose 3-5 day shipping

I'll probably get another stick of 256 DDR (266, I think is what i have) as well, so he can have 512, that will work better..

And as Slacker asked about my LCD, yes, I have it now. It's great. I have alot more space and it is is alot brighter and crisper. It was one of the Hypervision ones at Newegg. It has 17", 8ms, 500:1, and is a great addition. I think my CRTs are jelous now...

    Ok here are the differences

    XP 3000 vs. Sempron 2600
    Price: $140 vs. $83
    FSB: 333mhz vs. 333mhz
    GHz: 2.16 vs. 1.833GHz
    Cache: 512 vs. 256

I personally dont know if its worth the money...but its better..

Well, it is faster than my family's (mom and dad's) computer, which is an acient 1.0GHz Celeron... all he does is goes online and plays small games, so he really doesn't need a kick-arse cpu and ram.

the semprons are the replacements of the athlon XPs, they are more or less the same things. I saw an add in a local Fry's electronix the otherday with a sempron 2800+ and a motherboard for 80$together. just check the newspaper for what Fry's has on sale. if you want something online, then:

    happy hunting...
