    Type an X hit define brush preset.
    Type a + hit define brush preset.

    that makes them too skinny you have to use the polygonal lasso tool

    Not if you use the right font.
    I have a bunch of X and + brushes, all different sizes.

    even if you get a working version for ps7, you can't use the scatter option under smudge for 7 so you'll have to do it a different way
