Well, I'm looking to upgrade my computer (it's really bad, 950 mhz AMD) and I found a mothe/CPU combo on TigerDirect, but the processor is an AMD Sempron 2600+ 1.60GHz with a 128KB Cache and a 1600MHz FSB. I don't know much about processors at all, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how this compares to an Intel one, or if this one is worth buying. Thanks! ~UPA
sempron is crap. its amds version of the celeron. intel is crap, amd is better. rather than buying a combo like that purchase them separate. look at buying an ASRock Dual-Sata2 and an AMD 64 3200+. Whats your budget?
Lol, really cheap. I can spend $300 max, but I'd like to try to keep it under 200 or 150 if possible... Any ideas?
If you go to newegg.com you can find some decent deals. For the price range you have, I suggest going with a socket 754 amd athlon. The socket 754 is the older socket type, and will be cheaper than the new socket 939's. You should be able to get a 3000+ athlon, (which compares to a 3.0GHz pentium 4) and a decent motherboard if you use the 754 set up.. But you need to be careful that the rest of your componets are compatible with your new motherboard. (make sure that if you have an AGP set up, you don't go with a PCI-E motherboard... ect)
Thanks a lot guys, I'll run with what you said. I've built several computers, but the processor is the one thing I don't know very much about, and always have to ask for help with... Thanks again!
Well, I have another question for you gurus out there. I've been looking at motherboards, and most of the ones I'm looking at say they are 800 MHz FSB, then I found one that was 1600 MHz, and I was wondering why it's so much higher. Is it really faster, or did they just do something to dazzle me with numbers?
You probly shouldnt be looking at something that old and crappy anyway ...try the ASRock Dual-SATA2, like defuzion said. Only about 70 bucks for that.
[stress] Yeah, but I couldn't find a processor that was cheap enough... Because I also have to get RAM... But surely I can get a motherboard, processor, and RAM for under $300... [/stress]
