    run CPU-Z and it shoudl say which socket your proc runs on. Also, there is the fact that certain types of procs only run on certain socket. I know damn well that I will never see a PxE on socket 754 nor 939

    that motherboard is ancient... that is the only thing I know. I suggest upgrading your motherboard and processor in the semi-near future. all motherboards for the most part are the same shape, or form factor. if it says ATC form factor, you should be fine, if your case si small, get a mocro ATC board.

    trust me when I say it is at the age where an upgrade would be pointless and a complete new build would be a better choice, because fi you were to upgrade, you would need to swap the following: motherboard & CPU, ram, GFX card, & PSU

    just lettting you know, socket number does not have any real correlation with form factor. pretty much everything uses ATX or micro ATX. Many cases are made to handle both as well. I could swap the motherboards from my current computer and my old PIII without any dificulty, same goes with my old K6 computer.

    you will want to swap out your ram though. ram is relaively cheap anyway so it shouldn't matter a ton.

    Socket 478 ---> Obsolete
    Socket 604 ---> Obsolete?
    Socket 754 ---> in use
    Socket 775 ---> in use
    Socket 939 & 940 ---> in use
    Socket A ---> Obsolete

    The numbers are how many pin the CPU has Socket A is similar to Socket 478 there is also a Slot A CPU which is noe obsolete it pretty much just fits into a slot on the motherboard. I currently run a AMD Athlon 2600+ it's an old socket 478 chip still got plenty of life left in it :D
